They were actually. Vastly different to the norm.

Set during the first World War, the Doctor was a teacher at an exclusive boys school, Martha was a servant / school nurse. The catch being the Doctor was a human in the story who falls in love with fellow teacher Jessica Hynes (from the brilliant Spaced). His Timelord essence was being kept in a pocket watch to prevent him being tracked down by the Family of Blood.

The story idea with the pocket watch hiding a Time Lords essence was a prelude to the retirn of the Master in the series final three episodes.

Great killer scarecrows as well, not to mention creepy public schoolboys.
