That is an intersting point Robert, I think one of the strengths of Murnau's film is that it offers multiple interpretations and readings. I love the film's sense of the occult, it must have been something to see it back in the day.

Demoncrat those are great call-outs, I'd forgotten about Nadja, and that reminded me of Abel Ferrara's 1995 picture The Addiction which has become a bit of a lost film nowadays, I never see any mention of it...
