Yes, I believe his wife was viciously raped by some American GIs if I'm remembering the story right. I bought an NTSC-equipped VHS player back in the early 90s to see this film - my bro picked up the Warners tape in America. All Stanley Kubrick films are my favourite Stanley Kubrick films when I'm actually watching them but this one really does give 2001 a run for its money. It's a testament to the muscle that Stanley Kubrick had at Warners that he could have the studio pull the film from distribution, and I imagine it was a big earner back in the day...
