The confusion comes from the fact that the first academy awards had no Best Picture award in 1927 but two separate awards. 'Most Outstanding Production' was won by 'Wings' and 'Most Artistic Quality of Production' was won by Murnau's 'Sunrise - A Song of Two Humans'
