There's no doubt it's an excellent piece of filmmaking. What won me over was the fact that it didn't shrink away from the horror aspect. The ending teetered on the brink of sentimentality, but pulled back by being truthful and bleak... I watched on a bit of a downer, so ditto re the weepiness you mention.
