Season of the Witch (2011)
I've had this film knocking around for over a year now and the largely negative response to it put me off watching until now.
I don't really get the hostility towards the film. Set in the 14th century it follows the path of two Knights transporting an accused witch to a remote abbey to stand trial.
Starring Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman, the film is a lively action / horror affair, fast paced, action packed and boasting some fine set pieces, fortunately, until the final scenes the film isn't blatantly CGI heavy either. The film is well acted and has a superior British guest cast, Christopher Lee, Stephen Graham, Claire Foy and the excellent Robert Sheehan fresh from his stint on the brilliant Misfits.
The film looks the part, the photography is lovely to look at, its Budapest and Salzburg settings suit legends of ancient witchcraft and plague. The movie's tone is always serious, yet was a whole lot more fun than the simillar Black Death.
