Beautiful, isn't it? I don't know if I'd call it 'by the numbers' exactly, when it was one of the films writing the rulebook, but I know what you mean - it's certainly archetypal. When I started watching gialli,
B&BL and
The Girl Who Knew Too Much, were two of the first I saw. Since then I haven't adhered so strictly to the chronology.
