To be honest, I didn't think he'd be around much longer once Lina passed away. The two were inseparable and I kind of expected him to follow soon after, it just seems to happen with couples who are very close. Sad news indeed. But I'm glad he was around to see a kind of renaissance and a renewed interest in his work with the age of DVD.
Not all of his work was accessible but I always liked the idea that a maverick of his nature could exist within the film industry and still find a market. There's a certain kind of genius in that.
