Say what you will about the adaptation, but this book series hold some of my fondest childhood memories. Only as you get older do you take notice of some of the genuinely creepy idea's the villain had, as a child I never picked up on all the arranged marriage plot lines.
That aside, or even included, it's a damn creepy, mesmerising and a bit funny series. I really need to crack out my hardbacks and give them a re-read.
