I think there have only been 2 cheap store-bought players which could be made multiregion (Technika and Toshiba) and you can't get them anymore.
I'm sure the reason the Toshiba model could be made multiregion was because the firmware upgrade was made for the Australian models where players aren't allowed to be region locked which might be why it's easier for you to go region free.
