Bruno, my mate came back with this answer for you.

If the Laptop has a 64bit Processor then there is no reason not to use the 64Bit version of Windows. I have yet to come across a program that wouldn’t work on it so unless he is tinkering in some majorly old stuff he will be fine.

You can install either under the same licence key but if he has registered a version before he may have to contact Microsoft to convince them he isn’t running multiple copies. They are usually pretty good about it all
