I always pretty much disliked Lars' drumming. It's very generic Metal drumming. To my ears, it sounds forced, and lacks the musicality of Benante's, Hoglan's or Vinnie Paul's drumming.
Today, he's simply "too old for this shit", so to speak.
As for the drum sound on
St.Anger - I don't think it's too bad. I'm a sucker for nasty snare drum sounds. As a matter of fact, I used to use a 14" x 3,5" aluminium snare drum back in the day - very high-pitched, almost no snare wire. Kick-ass sound, and louder than every guitar out there.
