Indeed.
And Mark Goldblatt confirmed the unrated version was his director's cut (it was decided to delete the prologue scenes pretty early in the editing process).
The unrated cut was also released theatrically (and on VHS & LD) in France, the Netherlands and Australia (and possibly other territories). According to a
recent podcast interview with Goldblatt, the R-rated cut was actually made much later, prior to the US home video release in 1991.
