The problem is that sometimes they get refused access to the original material.
That just happened recently to FilmArt who wanted to restore Fernando di Leo's
The Boss. They were refused access and now have to work with the shoddy master they were given by the Italian right holders.
Another example is the recent restoration of
Suspiria. Once again, the Italian right holders said no. Then they granted access to the negatives to Synapse.
I suppose in the end it is all a question of good connections and big bucks.
