At least with Ash vs Evil Dead, it had the creative input of the people behind the original films and Bruce Campbell is playing Ash. With this version of The Exorcist, no one can possibly fill Max von Sydow's shoes as Father Merrin, nor Jason Miller in the role of Father Karras, Ellen Burstyn as Chris MacNeil, Linda Blair as Regan etc., etc., etc.

I also struggle to think of any way a modern director would be able to approach it with the same documentary-style realism Friedkin did with aspects of the 1973 film to such devastating effect. There will also be the input of CGI instead of practical effects, or limited practical effects 'enhanced' with CGI.
