I can't remember who wrote it or it's title but it was about this chap who was obsessed with some old explorer with a military rank. There were crazed dwarfs, if I remember rightly, and (quite possibly) exploding penguins or Labradors. I think that the title may have included the phrase "In the Footsteps of..." and there was a sequel mentioned. Anyone have any ideas?
