Doomwatch: Invasion. (1970)

Whilst exploring some caves two lads go missing in the Yorkshire Dales. Doomwatch investigate but come across an old country estate patrolled by armed military personnel with orders to kill anything that enters.

In a claustrophobic story which harks back to military experiments during the second World War, this is the best episode yet. I sound like a broken record in my comments on this series, but it just keeps getting better and better. It helps possibly that this episode is set quite close to me in the village of Grassington and the nearby town of Skipton is mentioned in the dialogue.

Earlier on i was desperate for the team to get outside, well this story is set outside and it's all the better for it. As with many of these stories the outcome is grim especially when the serene village is closed off to the world and the place is crawling with military vehicles and troops. The place still feels like a village and a community where everyone knows everyone else. All the more disturbing because it could actually happen. The Royal Engineers were actually used in this episode not just extras.

Not a jolly series. It ain't called Doomwatch for nothing.

If anyone wishes me to stop mentioning every episode that's okay. I will do. It's a series i highly recommend and stands up superbly in the here and now.
