For some reason, the opening few bars of 'Dirty Dreams' reminds me of the intro to the Sex Pistols song 'God Save The Queen'!

It's a good rock song, and the returning dream motif suggests 'Welcome To My Nightmare', which will be continued in the next song

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Vinnie Moore - Guitar
Hugh McDonald - Bass
Mickey Curry - Drums

11/12 - Dirty Dreams (Cooper, Vallance, Pfeifer)

"Well, I wake up burnin' in a soaking sweat
My pillows are drippin' and the sheets are wet
I jump out of bed and I turn on the light
This happens to me every night
Sometimes you turn into a snake with long black hair
Then you change into an angel, blonde and fair
You can turn yourself blue and I don't care
You can change your look
You can change your race
But it's always your touch
And always your face

Dirty dreams
How you wanna do me
Dirty dreams
Let me get through
Dirty dreams
Ultra sensor-otic movie starring me and you

Well, I close my eyes and you open your lips
There's a shock from my head to my fingertips
I fall through a hole cuz I can't get a grip
The room starts to spin and the world starts to turn
My heart catches fire and my bed starts to burn

Dirty dreams
How you wanna do me
Dirty Dreams
Anything for you, babe
Dirty Dreams
A realistic-ated movie starring me and you
Make my dreams come true

Shake my nights
You rattle my sleep
Roll my eyes, I'm in too deep

Dirty dreams
How you wanna do me
Dirty dreams
Let me get thru
Dirty dreams
An uncensor-ated movie
Dirty dreams
Oh....
Dirty dreams, You`re really getting to me
Dirty dreams, anything for you
Dirty dreams, I`m not an X-rated movie starring me and you
Dirty, dirty dreams
You oughta be ashamed of yourself..."

From the opening sound of a child's jack-in-the-box toy, to the final spoken fade out 'Wind Up Toy' is as creepy as anything Alice had previously recorded. Musically, it's all over the place - weird instruments and phrasing leads to a song full of discord, but it works within the context of the song

What really sets this song apart from everything else on the album, however, is the return of Steven, who was last seen on the album 'Goes To Hell' back in 1976. In this song, Steven has grown up (in body, anyway), and he is now locked up in an asylum.

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Joe Satriani - Guitars
Stef Burns - Guitars
Hugh McDonald - Bass
Mickey Curry - Drums
John Webster - Keyboards
Robert Bailey - Keyboards

12/12 - Wind Up Toy (Cooper, Ponti, Pepe, Pfeifer)

"Voices come from down the hall
In my room all painted white
I have my bat and rubber ball
I like to sleep with them at night

But now I'm all smiles
the good little shots must be winning
'Cause they crank my dial
My motor is stalled but my wheels are still spinning

Daddy won't discuss me
What a state I must be
Mommy couldn't stand living with a wind-up toy

All my friends live on the floor
Tiny legs and tiny eyes
They're free to crawl under the door
And, and someday soon so will I

But now I'm all smiles
These good little shocks must be working
I'm so happy now
Look, my fingers don't shake and my head isn't jerking

Daddy won't discuss me
What a pain I must be
Mommy couldn't stand having such a wound-up boy
Doctors want to check me
Poke me and dissect me
What do they expect? Feelings from a wound-up toy?
I don't think so
I'm just a wound-up toy
I'm just a wind-up toy

I'm lost in a nightmare
Shiny white halls drawing rats on the wall
Solitary confinement
Chained in a cell, got my own private hell

Preacher crucifies me
Warden wants to fry me
I was never young
Never just a little boy

Daddy won't discuss me
What a pain I must be
Mama couldn't stand having such a wound-up boy
I'm just a wind-up toy
I'm a wind-up toy
I'm just a wind-up toy
I'm just a wind-up toy
I'm just a wind-up toy (daddy won't discuss me)
wind up toy, wind-up toy (what a pain I must be)
I`m just wind-up toy (mama couldn't stand having such a wound-up boy)
Wind up toy, wind up toy
I'm just a wind-up toy
I'm just a wind-up toy
I'm just a wind-up, wind-up wind-up wind-up wind-up toy

(I`m just so happy now)

You know they come here every night
I see them, don`t you see them?
Hmmm, That`s odd isn`t it
I`m so tired, I`m winding down
You`ll have to go now it`s bedtime!

(Steven.....)"

Between June 9th and August 19th, 1991, the first leg of the tour covered America. Going under the title 'Operation Rock And Roll' tour, this was a series of co-headline dates with Judas Priest. Also on the bill were Motorhead, Metal Church and Dangerous Toys. However, these shows ran into severe financial problems and some dates ended up being canceled

The touring band consisted of:

Alice Cooper - Vocals
Stef Burns - guitar
Vinnie Moore - guitar (only for the 'Operation Rock And Roll' dates)
Pete Friesen - guitar (only for the European dates)
Greg Smith - bass
Eric Singer - drums
Derek Sherinian - keyboards

After the US dates, Alice played the 'Nightmare On Your Street' tour between August 27th and September 13th, 1991. This unusual tour was a series of free public mini shows that were performed everywhere from record store roof tops to public parks to causing a traffic jam in the heart of Times Square in NYC.

The set varied a few times on the number of songs (anywhere from 4-6) and order they were played but usually included (not in order)
  • 'Eighteen'
  • 'No More Mr. Nice Guy'
  • 'School's Out'
  • 'Hey Stoopid'
  • 'Love's A Loaded Gun'
  • 'Billion Dollar Babies'.

The European leg of the tour, dubbed the 'Hey Stoopid Tour' started in the UK, and dates were between September 28th and October 10th. Shows were played in Dublin, Wembley, St. Austell, Bournemouth, Sheffield, Whitley Bay, Edinburgh and Birmingham. Depending on which show you attended, support came from either The Almighty or Wolfsbane

The basic setlist for both the Operation Rock And Roll tour and the European dates was:
  • Under My Wheels
  • Trash
  • No More Mr. Nice Guy
  • Billion Dollar Babies
  • Love's a Loaded Gun
  • Bed Of Nails
  • I'm Eighteen
  • I Love the Dead /Devil's Food / Steven / Black Widow (Instrumental)
  • Sick Things
  • Feed My Frankenstein
  • Cold Ethyl
  • Only Women Bleed
  • Wind Up Toy - Ballad Of Dwight Fry
  • Poison
  • Snakebite
  • Go To Hell
  • School's Out
  • Hey Stoopid
  • Elected
