I saw this at the cinema when it was released and, like you, hadn't read the source material (I still haven't). I went in hoping for the best but, based on Tim Burton's previous duds, expected the worst, and was pleasantly surprised by a thoughtful and involving film which engrossed me throughout. It's really well written by Jane Goldman and Burton does a great job with the design and all-star cast. It is something I would quite happily watch again.
