Tower of Terror (1941)

I know i always wax lyrical about these obscure British films that Network churn out by the dozen, well here's one that really is something else.

Set on the German coast during WWII it's a tale of secret agents, concentration camp escapees, action, intrigue and hook handed lighthouse keepers.

Defying genres, Tower of Terror is part action movie - there are some well executed shootouts - part film noir, culminating in a final descent into gripping horror movie territory.

The plot races along from start to finish with a final twenty minutes as suspenseful as anything i can recall. The film is superbly acted especially Michael Rennie as the secret agent and Wilfrid Lawson whose lighthouse keeper plunges further into violent madness. (He's a bit of an oddball from the off)

The Network dvd is a BFI restoration job and looks very good for a lost film of this ilk. Also available on blu-ray.

Highly recommended. The best from The British Film Collection since The Night Has Eyes.
