The Terror of the Tongs (1961)
Bordering on horror, this Christopher Lee starrer is in my opinion, along with the following years Captain Clegg, the best of the Hammer historical films
Filmed in lush Eastmancolor with a pounding score by James Bernard which has echoes of his classic Dracula theme (Don't they all?) and some superb studio sets.
A very lively plot involving Lee's Red Dragon Tong terrorizing the streets near Hong Kong harbour until they murder the daughter of a British sea captain (Geoffrey Toone) who vows to end the cult's reign of terror - With strong support from Yvonne Monlaur, Marne Maitland, and Roger Delgado. - as well as a tight 76 minutes running time ensure not a moment is wasted. The action comes thick and fast and is remarkably bloody for 1961 - fingers are lopped off as part of the blood soaked carnage on offer.
Some will suggest it's racist having the likes of Christopher Lee playing a Hong Kong native but he's excellent in this and clearly the best man for the role. Besides the film boasts the talents of Burt Kwouk, Ric Young among others as well.
Recommended.
