Do we need this debate again? The water buffalo killed in Apocalypse Now, kangaroos killed in Wake in Fright were not "for the purposes of making the film", but something which was taking place in the location and captured on film to be incorporated into the movie. It's different from staging unnecessary slaughter or horse falls, for example.
I'm not a big fan of the "quick kill" distinction which means a chicken can be killed in Hidden, the turtle in Cannibal Holocaust, or the snails (if the Animals Act extended to invertebrates) in Mean Creek. It seems to be a way of allowing certain animal slaughter to the films when disallowing others.
It's been quite a while since I saw Mountain of the Cannibal God, but all the animal deaths seem to involve a great deal of suffering, completely gratuitous, and incidental to the plot.
