Last Jedi's main problem was the casino scene. A whole film based around a military engagement isn't a bad idea and distracting from that felt a little too much like a distraction. That said the film took some chances with the material for better or worse. I loved the idea that things turned out shitty for Luke. As I said in earlier posts, if your going to have a wise hermit character it's worth having them a little messed up and bitter over past failures. Lukes demise was genuinely badass to me and at least acknowledged the series kurosawa roots with traditional stances for the swordplay. Plus I still get genuinely tickled seeing the supposed 'big bad' get offed by his whiney apprentice.
I wouldn't mind seeing a re-edited version of The Last Jedi which loses the casino / Del Toro sub plot completely. It would tighten things up a hell of a lot. They could also ditch a fair amount of Luke and Rey as that's been done before and in a far superior way using Luke, Ben and Yoda in Empire. When i say superior i mean less boring. The teachings of the Force has always bored me stupid no matter which film it's in. 'Mumbo jumbo' i think Solo called it. He was right.
