I think you're both missing out, i grew up with the original Planet of the Apes films and have watched them so many times.
The new ones are respectful of the idea's but take the story in a different direction so they do not ruin the originals like some reboots do.
All three of the new trilogy are good but my favourite is Dawn of the planet of the apes which for me personally is my second favourite of the entire apes saga, only beaten by the original 1968 film.
They show up on TV quite a bit so they are definitely worth watching if you're at a loose end one night.
