As you know, Reaps, The Shining is my all-time favourite film so I am biased but I will say that Chinatown' Jake is probably Jack's finest hour (or two!) as an actor - It's a brilliant film too.
I'm not sure of the landscape now but when I was getting into film in the late 1080s Chinatown was held in very high esteem by critics of the time, so I wouldn't say it's overlooked. Polanski has never suffered any sort of shunning either. His classics (Repulsion, Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown, in particular) are universally revered and each new film he's made has been met with interest and mostly fanfare - I'm a firm believer in the adage of allowing the work to stand by itself - it should never be judged for the crimes of its maker.
