Some films can be studio led and hugely successful and still be a cult film. I think Joker fits into this category.
I'd also argue this for Tim Burton's version of Batman. The gothic take and edgy violence earn it's stripes in the cult arena but it was also a huge world-wide boxoffice smash.
They are examples of where somehow (against the odds?) studios take a gamble on edgy, leftfield visions that subvert the commercial status quo.
