After the success of The Terminator and Aliens, James Cameron wanted to make a tough film and he done it with this. This I have always found to be a great tense, claustrophobic film about a downed submarine and a crew of underwater workers getting hired to escort a navy SEAL team to go and find the wreckage and see what caused it to crash but also find something else under the sea bed. The acting is great even Ed Harris's character claiming to be calm then 3 seconds later belts out the loudest WHAT. Michael Biehn as the Seal LT. who ends up suffering cabin fever and basically trying to cause mayhem and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio who refuses to speak of the film does a good part as Harris's ex who joins the crew and everyone seems to hate.

Cameron creates a realistic environment that still feels otherworldly, populates it with real people and ratchets the tension to unnerving heights or depths. He was able to take a chance on using CGI effects that certainly paid off well. The cast were subjected to a lot of frustrating times and one or two near death experiences, Leo Burmester has said anytime someone complains about working on a bad movie his reply is always the same "F@~K You, I did The Abyss".

Another stone cold classic that's screaming for the blu treatment.
