A Serbian Film Review - Total Sci-Fi

I know I am going against my own theory of "if you ignore it, it will go away" but honestly if you ignore it, it will go away. Having met the director in Cannes, at a champagne bash no less, I can tell you he is LOVING this attention. Oh sure, in interviews he'll try and say this is a film about Serbia etc but if you want to learn about Serbia you won't learn a damn thing from this film. This is a long, desperate cry for attention - which is what any halfwit who films a baby being raped wants. Let's see some of the money the people behind this are oh so happy to be making donated to victims of sexual abuse whom this film is so happy to exploit for a few pennies (or those who suffered in the war - whom this guy clearly cares so much about).

And no the BBFC won't pass it uncut but the job has already been done and the mug has gotten his 15 minutes of fame. Depressing.

Human Centipede is a better movie, though - albeit with some bad acting and not much going on. It's still fairly gripping though. I found it hard to turn away and definitely wanted to see how it was going to conclude. With A Serbian Film I wanted to fast-wind.
I have to admit, I'm not drawn to see this at all. Part of me is slightly curious, but I think I'm going to pass. There's some stuff I just can't class as 'entertainment', and these days I lean more towards escapism rather than confrontationality. I don't mind challenging films now and again but, call me uncultured or whatever, but I'd rather see slick gunplay, car crashes and explosions these days. I'm also bored with the so-called 'torture porn' strand of films too. They never seem to offer anything new. The first Saw was a novel idea, but the series has just become sillier and more improbable as it goes along. You could say that about most horror franchises, but the thing with Saw is that it's meant to be gritty and very real-world, therefore it stretches credibility more than something like the Elm Street series, because they didn't have a probable scenario to begin with, existing in the realm of the fantastic. As I get older I'm all too aware of the horrors of the world, so I don't really need a film to show me how horrible the world can be. No, I'd rather be entertained, uncouth man that I am.

I just don't feel the need anymore to see the new 'most extreme movie ever' whenever one comes along. I've read a lot about A Serbian Movie and it's not something that appeals to my tastes, I'm afraid.
