Commando (1985)

Is it just me or would anyone else like to see a fully uncut UK edition of Arnie's Commando? As far as I'm aware you can only get the rubbish cut version over here!

Pete 27th November 2009 03:50 PM

I have never seen it all the way through but yes, an uncut version would be welcome.

Stephen@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 03:54 PM

Even better would be to release the director's cut over here that was released in the U.S. a while back

vincenzo 27th November 2009 03:54 PM

The BBFC waived the original cinema cuts (2 scenes) in 2007 but it doesn't seem to have appeared yet. The DVD suffered ridiculous distributor edits on top of the BBFC cuts.

Stephen@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 03:57 PM

at one point Play showed a Commando ultimate edition as coming soon but it quickly disappeared off the site

Sarah@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 03:57 PM

My boyfriend's got an uncut version from France but the director's cut over here would be pretty awesome. It's such a fun action film it's a shame to see it so mistreated in the UK!

Stephen@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 04:01 PM

The Director's cut is awesome. The toolshed scene is pretty brutal and we actually see Matrix chopping off one of the soldiers arms(although i think that was cut by the bbfc) unfortunately the mythical scene of him slapping said soldier with his own arm isn't there. The director says it was just too ridiculous and they didnt shoot it.Shame.

Yes it was. The other BBFC cut was to the closing tracking shot of the impaled Bennett.

Stephen@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 04:04 PM

I thought so.The director's cut then shows another shot of the soldier on the ground waving his stump for a second

Stephen@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 04:08 PM

All this Commando talk has put me in the mood for a viewing now lol

vincenzo 27th November 2009 04:11 PM

Let off some steam then.

Stephen@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 04:16 PM

lol nice one.Talking of which, one of the special features on the director's cut is a some alternate takes of that line.I think let off some steam Bennett was the best

Sarah@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 04:25 PM

This directors cut is so getting a place in my boyfriend's Christmas stocking!

Not that it's kind of a present for me too...

Stephen@Cult Labs 27th November 2009 04:30 PM

Of course it isn't :tongue1:

The director's cut dvd contains the uncut theatrical version too.It really is about time it was relesed here.

pedromonkey 27th November 2009 06:35 PM

It's available on region 1 dvd and region 4.Not sure if there's a region 2 dvd,I know it's not out in the UK yet

Angel 27th November 2009 08:39 PM

BBC1 have recently been screening the uncut version with the BBFC cuts restored.

Vampix 28th November 2009 12:42 AM

I watched Commando on ITV1 last weekend and the arm chopping and tracking shot of the impaled Bennett was in there!

The former is a single disc release while the latter spreads the relevant content over two DVDs.

Classic Arnie and an archetypal example of how America once did action movies. Brainless, brutal and brilliant!

Doesn't happen much in Hollywood these days unfortunately but good 'ol Sly Stallone seems to be addressing the issue.:)

EmKayMadeley 30th November 2009 10:24 PM

Wow, the extra bits in the Director's Cut sound hilarious! I watched it last year with my flatmate, we had so much fun! I think we watched 28 Days Later afterwards, bit of a jarring transition...

Nothing! There's never a dull moment in the film. It's insane action all the way, baby!:)

Daemonia 6th December 2009 10:11 AM

I must admit, Commando is a favourite of mine. Seeing the uncensored version was quite a revelation!

'Come on Bennett, throw away the chicken shit gun, you don't just want to pull the trigger, you want to put the knife in me, and look me in the eye, and see whats going on in there when you turn it, thats what you want to do, right?'

vincenzo 6th December 2009 11:23 AM

I first saw it on a cinema in Boston, USA in 1985. The audience reactions were just hilarious.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 6th December 2009 11:03 PM

Is there not a missing scene where someone gets clobbered by a severed arm?:lol:

Hello deja vu. Haven't we met before?

Peter Neal 7th December 2009 10:15 AM

There's a German R2 of the DC, whhich can be easily ordered via Austria, NOT via "amazon.de" as it's (not surprisingly) on the German "Index of Restricted Movies".:thumb:

BTW: Where you aware that "Commando" received a RUSSIAN REMAKE?

It's due for release in Germany quite soon under the imaginative title "Phantom Kommando: Die Rückkehr" ("Commando: The Return")

They'll probably even get the guy who dubbed Arnie to voice the Russian lead for the German language version.

Here are some stills from the Russian redux...It DOES look quite familar, doesn't it?

No Bennett moustache though - it can never be the same! ;)

"Come on Bennett. Let's party!"

"I don't need the girl. I don't need the giiiirrrrllll! I'm gonna kill you Joohhnn!!

bedorca 13th December 2009 08:16 AM

Without doubt, my favourite Arnie flick

So much to love....!!

Splatterdragon73 13th December 2009 11:20 AM

Like the shopping mall security guard punch-up.

Pint size loverboy Sully panicking when he sees Matrix manhandling mall cops and later the diminutive romeo getting trapped inside a phone booth as he calls for help. Only to be tossed around by our hero while still in the kiosk!

I also love Matrix's burst of superhuman strength when the uniformed bunch all try to pile on top of him and the security guard who tries to impress two female shoppers with the line "Wanna see me kick some ass?"!

Great stuff!:thumb:

It was both of these.

Rik 27th January 2013 11:17 AM

I've always preferred Predator myself, but Commando is certainly one of Arnie's best films, I love how he dispatches all those enemies without taking a bullet himself, pure classic 80's action!

The amount of acrobatics in the final scenes is great bad guys doing flips and tumbles like the olympics.
