Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray - Get Involved in The Artwork!

Ok so it would seem that overall the majority of people have dug the all-new commissioned oil paintings that Arrow have had Rick Melton do for the first three Arrow titles and for everyone else they can flip over the sleeve to enjoy the cool originals.

Well for the Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray the intention is to get Rick to do an all-new painting plus offer a classic artwork on the flipside of the sleeve.

For me personally I've never thought any Dawn artwork has matched up to the epic quality of the film - it's tough to do because it's a landscape space - but I think WE should have a go.

This film is a legendary classic - we want the artwork to be brilliant - Rick can pull this off - I know it! BUT WHAT WILL HE PAINT?

Here's where I want input from you guys - what should Rick paint for the cover, how should it look, should it have any of the characters/lead zombies in it, should it be of a classic moment from the film like the zombies erupting through the lift doors, should it be something more abstract?

We want your ideas and plenty of them - don't worry about trying to provide lots of detail (but you're welcome to if you can describe how it looks in your head) - Rick is the guy who breathes life into it - but from lots of ideas from all of us could come the vision we'll get him to paint.

Other forums and sites are welcome to submit ideas as long as they have one member here to submit the idea through that they have all agreed on (a bit like a gruesome Eurovision). I know Jonny over at LoveLock&Load is going to get involved.

I'm really excited about this - we've got a chance to attempt to come up with the artwork that might finally do justice to Dawn of the Dead!

I was thinking for a moment there of some sort of montage of classic scenes from the movie but most of them would contain spoilers.I dont know how people would really feel about that.I would assume most people would be ok with it having seen the film and knowing it inside out anyway

Almar@Cult Labs 16th July 2009 12:02 PM

I think as long as we're not repeating the Planet of the Apes - as in sticking a certain statue on the front - we'll be ok. Anyway we can thrash that out on here.

Well I was thinking of including scenes of rising from the dead from under a sheet and elevator doors opening to reveal someones fate. They even stuck that one on the cover of the uk EIV video! so i think those could be some nice striking images.Perhaps even that iconic image of the zombie with the machete in the head

Almar@Cult Labs 16th July 2009 12:59 PM

The elevator scene does have real appeal.

HamTyler808 16th July 2009 01:28 PM

I think one of my favorite images from the movie is the empty car park with the zombies dotted around as they approach the mall. For me, there's something incredibly bleak about it.

Maybe the empty grey carpark and mall in the background with the helicopter flying towards it, and a zombie in the foreground about to attack the camera, like in the elevator pic.

Almar@Cult Labs 16th July 2009 02:08 PM

I love that bleakness too - it just feels like the end of the world as it probably would be - not some inferno of CGI - just a bleak day in a crummy car park with the undead shuffling towards you!

It's also a very visual scene and one that remains in your mind way after the film has ended. However the only way I could see that recreated on the cover is if it was in landscape. Personally I love the old VHS landscape covers. :p Remember the old VHS Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer cover?

Almar@Cult Labs 16th July 2009 06:43 PM

Yeah I have mentioned landscape DVD covers but no way would a retailer take them anymore sadly!

kathyacker 16th July 2009 07:50 PM

my favourite dotd artwork is these italian/german posters which are in taschen's horror poster book. if the original poster is just going on the reverse, maybe it would be ok to use something with the 'zombi' title instead of 'dotd'? tho technically the argento cut probably counts as a different film...

as for the new design, i don't think the masters of giallo covers would be nearly as effective without the 80s retro white border and arrow logo, so maybe thats an issue.

The Arrow logo and border will remain for the Blu-ray - just need to work out how to make use of the tiny space Blu ray gives you!

The reverse could well be a Zombi poster - that's not impossible.

The best artwork IMO was the old Alpha/Intervision artwork, but that has already been used twice.
Simple...but chilling.

i really like this picture would look nice with a blood red going into a orange colour dawn of the dead logo

Almar@Cult Labs 17th July 2009 10:18 AM

Yeah... that is a nice shot. The lift one was my favourite so far but that's now starting to inch into my mind's eye...

I've always preferred the U.K. theatrical artwork for DOTD so count me in for this cover! The concept of the U.S. illustration i think is cool (zombie's head representing the start of a new ravenous race of being.) but i just reckon the British equivalent is so much more interesting and impressive to look at.:)

Not a bad idea this one. A nice stark and abstract cover that's certainly eye catching. I just believe this is supposed to be 'Dawn Of The Dead'. When i look at this artwork i just think 'Dawn Of The Gas Mask Wearing SWAT Trooper'!

However, i do think this illustration would make a good flip cover so it's definitely a contender imo. No offence to anyone here with this statement and well done Stevoj!:)

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th July 2009 02:12 PM

Yeah it doesn't scream DOTD does it but I like the image.I think it would cool reverse artwork,it's something a bit different from the usual zombie images used to promote the film

Almar@Cult Labs 18th July 2009 02:56 PM

Ok well I tell you guys what would be handy - let's sort out what Rick should paint first so we can get him busy next week. Whilst he's painting we'll then look into the reverse and what that's going to be.

So far the zombies erupting into the lift or trying to break into the shopping centre seem to me to be good ideas for a painting.

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th July 2009 02:59 PM

I'd agree with that. It's a nice startling image

Pete 18th July 2009 03:04 PM

According to Rick in this months darkside Almar is hard to please:

quote:

If you are marketing these movies get in contact with Almar Haflidason. Now theres a man whos not happy until hes made his artist do each cover three times. The bastard!

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th July 2009 06:09 PM

For the life of me I can't seem to think of what I'd like to see on the new artwork.I'd make a lousy designer.

I was thinking of making people post at least three times each message until I was happy with it... ;)

Splatterdragon73 19th July 2009 09:11 AM

How about a profile image of a city with a helicopter flying around and the 'zombies charging in the elevator' illustration occupying the sky above. Except the lift would be removed leaving just the gut munchers. Lunging out of the atmosphere so to speak, if that makes any sense!

Similar to a European poster i like for Zombie Flesh Eaters only in that one the deadsters are standing over and looking down on the city. Some artwork for City Of The Living Dead and Zombie 3 also features a concept much the same.

Just the idea of a threat to humanity looming over an urban area really appeals to me. Even if variations on it have been done before.:)

Stephen@Cult Labs 19th July 2009 12:31 PM

Or how about a slight variation of that.Instead of the city you could have the mall with it's empty parking lot with the helicopter hovering above and the zombies above that?

Almar@Cult Labs 19th July 2009 03:55 PM

Now these two ideas are pretty tasty - that takes a good scene and turns it into something more cinematic - something with a sense of scale. I can see these in my head and they look nice! What does everyone else think?

Stephen@Cult Labs 20th July 2009 07:13 AM

It might just be me but there doesn't seem to be much interest in this.Don't know if it's because not many people here have a blu-ray player :tsk:

Almar@Cult Labs 20th July 2009 08:13 AM

I suspect more Blu-ray players will be getting picked up this autumn - they'll get cheaper for this Christmas and a lot of people already have hi-def ready TVs.

Stephen@Cult Labs 20th July 2009 08:44 AM

True.I just thought a few more people might have thrown some ideas into the pot
