Thanks to everyone who contributed a list of their favourite films directed by Steven Spielberg.

The topic of this week is quite a simple one and is devoted to films which, entirely or in most part, take place on a boat or ship. These will vary from rowing boats to cruise ships, submarines to yachts, and fishing vessels to battleships.

Top Ten Films Set on Boats, Ships or Subs.

Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003)
Crimson Tide (1995)
H.M.S. Defiant (1962)
Juggernaut (1974)*
Boat Trip (2002)
Hunter Killer (2018)
The Final Countdown (1980)
The Ghost Galleon (1974)
Captain Phillips (2013)
The Lost Continent (1968)

One or two were unfortunate not to make this top ten. Hitchcock's Lifeboat was in to begin with, as was Cameron's disaster epic Titanic and classic war movie The Battle of the River Plate. 1956's sailing comedy Three Men in a Boat was also considered.

Horror films set on ships are variable to say the least. I opted for Blind Dead film The Ghost Galleon mainly due to it's wonderful atmosphere, the same goes for The Wheatley Hammer film The Lost Continent which is for the most part set on board a ship. Death Ship was another close (ish) call and 2002's Below was subtly chilling. Al Passeri's Creatures from the Abyss is a lot of fun for me but it's not what you could call a good film, however i did consider it for the top ten.

I didn't opt for Jaws as it doesn't really fulfill the subject criteria.

It was only last week i rewatched it and it isn't set on a boat or ship ENTIRELY OR FOR THE MOST PART. It's a two hour film and the last forty minutes are set on the Orca. That leaves one hour and twenty minutes of a two hour film NOT set on a boat.

Had i ignored the subject criteria then Jaws would have been my #1.

Just saying. ;)

It's a Korean film, also known as Haemoo, which I hadn't seen until it was released by 88 Films. It's a brilliant film which is cowritten by Bong Joon Ho, the guy who wrote and directed films including The Host, Snowpiercer, and Parasite.
