I think I have seen the first three, but they are so similar I couldn't be sure!

I have a Dolby Atmos demo disc and there is a scene from one of the Transformers films – it's astonishing how poor some of the CGI is rendered and how obvious the edges of the animated segments are when it is upscaled to 4K. There is a new one – Bumblebee – being released in cinemas soon and I thought it looked bad to the point where I was cringing at the dialogue.

Dark Crimes (2017, Alexandros Avranas)
Polish set thriller centred around a disgraced detective, a cold case and an unusual club. Starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, whom I would love to see in some frothy romcom :pound: as I have seen plenty of her anatomy already my life!! Ahem. Not quite grim enough, expect a remake with the Fassbinder shortly :rolleyes:.

I thought the one with Marky Mark was an absolute laugh riot myself

If she appears in a French language remake of Along Came Polly, Rumor Has It… or The Bounty Hunter (itself a remake of Midnight Run) or, to use another actress, The Backup Plan, that would be worth watching!

bleakshaun 7th August 2018 07:12 PM

Double Down
An ex-agency mercenary is hired to shut down the Las Vegas strip and intends to use anthrax to do so, while he lives in a car, eats tuna and makes sure the government don't track him.
This is a weird film, its like if Tommy Wiseau, David Lynch and Alejandro Jodorowsky had a child who then decided to make an espionage film. It actually tops Fateful Findings I felt. Need more Breen dammit.

She seems to have a bit of a penchant for extreme cinema, what with Antichrist and Nymphomaniac as well. ;)

I like to see her in lighter roles now and again. My Wife Is An Actress and 3 Hearts are worth a watch as well.
And she also did another good French film called Lemming. That's more of a supernatural thriller.

Marathon Man. A postgrad student (Dustin Hoffman), who is oblivious to the activities of his older brother (Roy Scheider), who he believes to be an ordinary businessman, finds himself dragged into a terrifying conspiracy involving millions in stolen diamonds and an ageing Nazi war criminal (Laurence Olivier) in this cracking mid-70s thriller. I've seen this once before like 20 years ago, but I couldn't really remember it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Great film. Looks fantastic on Blu ray as well.

The church.

Starting off in the middle ages, a army of teutonic knights on horseback invade a village because they are supposed to be witchs in league with satan. heads are lopped off with the horses kicking a head around afterwards. and when they have all been slayed they bury all the bodies in a big pit and stick a big cross over the grave to stop any evil spirits escaping. Afterwards a big church is built on the site as well.
Moving to present day a librarian gets a job there and accidently opens the grave in the catacombs unleasing evil forces.

This is a top notch italian horror with stunning visuals and a great Goblin sound track. The gothic church looks awesome and creepy.

Some familiar faces as well with the chap out of Cannibal ferox playing a priest and also the old chap who played Virelli the architect in Inferno.
Asia argento also turns up as well as a young teenager who is always exploring secret passagers in the church so she can sneak out at night to go to discos.

very good film, and with some good gore as well with a man commiting suicide with a jack hammer and a old woman ringing the church bells with her husbands head.
and a stand out scene is a woman having sex with a goat like demon during a black mass. 94.6 out of 100.

bleakshaun 8th August 2018 01:36 PM

Galaxy of Terror
A crew are ordered to find a missing ship, they find it but also multiple horrors within the planet they are on.
Only Roger corman could make an efficient alien ripoff which includes a young Robert Englund (stubble and all), as well as Sid Haig and a woman who (I think) is raped by a giant maggot.
Fine piece of schlock.

Ever wonder if there is a reason for that?

Basically no one likes it and everyone who took a chance on it gave their copy to CEX who now have about 750,000 copies of it.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 8th August 2018 02:27 PM

This is the review I wrote of the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Blu-ray release prior to it being put out for general sale:

The Bounty Hunter

I had heard fairly negative things about The Bounty Hunter but, rather than go with what the critics say, I decided to find out for myself and see if it was really that bad (8% according to Rotten Tomatoes) or whether the critics were just being overly harsh and snobby about a good hearted romantic comedy. You know what? The critics were right.

The Bounty Hunter stars Gerard Butler as Milo Boyd, an ex-cop turned bounty hunter, who is asked by his employer, bail bondsmen Sid, to bring in his ex-wife, brilliant journalist Nicole Hurley, who has failed to attend a court hearing for unpaid parking tickets. For Milo, this seems like the dream job but it isn't long until he believes Nicole's story about being onto a hot story which may mean that her life is in danger.

Nope, I'm not buying it either.

Anyway, Milo thinks that his luck is in as he is going to be paid $5000 to take his ex-wife to jail but, after he has been shot at and had his vintage convertible trashed by a gangster in a SUV, he thinks that what began as an easy day's work will be far from that. From the very beginning you know that Milo will succeed and get Nicole to jail, earn his money and she will somehow manage to break the story as they learn to love each other again.

The Bounty Hunter is basically an incompetent remake of Midnight Run, that 1988 action/comedy movie directed by Martin Brest only with Gerard Butler in the Robert De Niro role and Jennifer Aniston playing the Charles Grodin part. The odd thing with Gerard Butler is that he seems to be a man with absolutely no comedic timing yet somehow manages to be funny when he is desperately trying to be serious; Law Abiding Citizen was full of lines that were incredibly amusing even though Butler was trying to be threatening. Watch 300 and tell me that some of those lines aren't unintentionally amusing. Jennifer Aniston, on the other hand, is an actress who can be extremely funny as she rose to fame and fortune in a sitcom, winning an Emmy in the process. Her transition from TV star to film star has not exactly been plain sailing and she can occasionally get 'lost' on the big screen.

With these two actors who, on an off day, have absolutely zero talent when it comes to comedy, it is doubly unfortunate that they are given a leaden script which is utterly devoid of humour and the direction, by Andy Tennant, does our two leads absolutely no favours whatsoever. If you are looking for one glimmer of fun, one tiny sparkle in this terrible mess of a movie, it comes in the very brief appearances of Christine Baranski doing a Joan Rivers impression. That's how low the film sinks and how desperate I was to look for comedy to justify its position as a romantic comedy.

Unlike Midnight Run, The Bounty Hunter is a baggy mess where you never feel that the two leads are in danger and will, by the end, end up back in love with Milo having completed his task. Not enough is made of the bail bondsmen role as Jeff Garlin is a tremendous comedic actor and if he was given as much screen time as Joe Pantoliano was in Midnight Run, there would be many more laughs than they were in this comedic dud.

Also, I'm not sure whether this was a contractual obligation thing or she thought it would be a great idea, but Jennifer Aniston seem to spend the entire film in low-cut tops ensuring the camera spent many minutes staring straight down her cleavage. Some may think that this is a reason to watch the film, but I just thought it was barrel scrapingly bad taste. This was a massive box office and critical failure and I can see why.

Extra Features
Having sat through the film, the last thing I wanted to do was wade through hours of extra features so, for good or ill, the supplementary material is limited to three fairly standard EPK pieces: Making the Bounty Hunter; Stops Along the Road and Rules for Outwitting a Bounty Hunter.

I knew these were going to be bad when the first one, the Making Of, began with Gerard Butler saying how the script was edgy, sharp and utterly hilarious, going on to say that he couldn't put it down and, once he read it, couldn't wait to make the film. There really isn't much material explaining the filmmaking process, only Butler, Aniston and members of the crew talking about what a terrific experience it was, how Butler and Aniston were extremely game in going into a lake and how the car chase and crash was a brilliant thing to do.

There are also a few trailers for other Sony Pictures Home Entertainment releases. All of these extra features are in high definition which is just how it should be.

The Picture
For a film only a few months out of the cinema and presented in 1080p high definition, you would expect, nay should expect, the film to look absolutely superb and it does. Bizarrely, Jennifer Aniston and Gerard Butler appear to have been to the same tanning salon prior to shooting as they are exactly the same shade of brown!

The Bounty Hunter isn't a film that demands a great deal from the cinematographer or the transfer process onto disc for home viewing so it is unsurprising that it looks as good as it does, with vibrant colours, good contrast levels and razor sharp edges.

The Sound
The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is very impressive with crystal clear dialogue, ambient sounds from the rear surrounds and, during the one action sequence, an extremely good soundstage in which the gunshots come from across the room as the tyres are squealing.

Strangely for an SPHE release, there isn't the usual plethora of different language tracks and subtitles (DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 French track and a Dolby digital 5.1 Thai option, with subtitles in Arabic, Dutch, English, French, Hindi and Thai) but there are decent English HoH subtitles and a Dolby Digital 5.1 audio descriptive track to cater for the hard of hearing and visually impaired.

Final Thoughts
I have reviewed some rubbish in my time, and not just low budget B-movie rubbish, but big budget films with A list stars Bride Wars, Marley & Me and Max Payne spring to mind. The Bounty Hunter joins that list as an utterly dreadful film, bereft of laughs, romantic tension and any threat to the two main characters. The only violence that does take place is against one of Nicole's colleagues, a man who we neither know nor care much about. If you want to watch a film in which a mismatched couple are on the run from a variety of violent individuals whilst trying to get from A to B, rent or buy Midnight Run.

I didn't consider Marley and Me rubbish. Even though i will never watch it again and threw the dvd in the outside bin immediately after viewing.

The final few minutes were so heartbreaking i couldn't bare to watch it again (And yes Owen Wilson was terrific in these scenes). I watched it one night when my parents came over as we all thought it would be a charming dog film. Come the end we were all in floods of tears, even my dad who NEVER cries at films, it was just too much for people who had kept dogs all our lives and experienced the scenario of a beloved friend being put to sleep for ever.

I have never felt so mortified and devastated after watching a film. Ever.

To be fair, i have found a lot of great bargains in Cex lately for under £1.

but i think i will give that one a miss. Jennifer aniston is not my favorite comedy actress
compared to Reese witherspoon and Cameron diaz.

I have never felt so mortified and devastated after watching a film. Ever.

This is what I wrote about the film at the time, just before the Blu-ray release:

Based on the novel by John Grogan, Marley & Me stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston who begins the film as the newly married Grogans move from Michigan to Miami for work. Both are journalists but John has ambitions beyond being a columnist as he wants to be a reporter. However the first job he’s offered is as a columnist at the Sun-Sentinel so he accepts and he and Jen move into their house with two incomes. Wanting to delay the biological clock a little, John buys Jen a puppy for her birthday and she chooses the cheapest one – the ‘clearance puppy’ as she names it – before jetting off to cover a trial.

When the three-week weaning period is over John collects the dog and is trying to think of a name when Bob Marley starts playing on the car radio; Bob? Robert?, he wonders before settling on Marley who he quickly finds is not one to be left alone nor trusted with anything of value. Marley will eat anything and then come back for seconds and thirds when proper dog food is on offer. John’s best friend is the ultra-macho single guy Sebastian whose reporting for the New York Times would put both Woodward and Bernstein to shame – when he’s not chasing off to Columbia to investigate the drug trade and bumping into Pablo Escobar, he’s talking to drug runners somewhere else exotic and getting front pages. All John has is a weekly column that soon begins telling topical news stories with a personal edge, many of which involve Marley.

Following a miscarriage, the Grogans go for a honeymoon in Ireland where Jen conceives the first of their three children that grow up with Marley during a move to Boca and then another to Philadelphia when John lands a job at the Inquirer. All this time, Marley is ‘the worst dog in the world’, urinating when and where he shouldn’t, getting thrown out of obedience school and terrorising the dogsitter.

I have to admit going into this with the lowest possible expectations, all of which it met. Although Scott Frank and Don Roos are writers with a certain amount of pedigree (boom boom) they don’t seem to know what they want this film to be. It is a romantic film, a rom-com, a slacker movie, a drama, a tearjerker and a family film and they use a scattergun approach to try and hit every marker along the way. As such it feels incredibly disjointed as you’re never sure what sort of film you’re watching. Not helping matters is the fact that Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston, both fine comedic actors but out of their depth in a dramatic element, have absolutely no chemistry and don’t look like a natural couple that would dare to be intimate in an Irish B&B with myriad Catholic iconography on the walls. With the film having a fourteen-year timespan, neither Wilson nor Aniston look in their late twenties at the beginning nor in their early forties at the end as it seems all that’s been done is a change in wardrobe – they don’t physically look any older!

I guess most people know the ending but I won’t mention it here but I felt it was mawkish and manipulative and they may as well have had little signs popping up saying ‘cry now’ and ‘are you crying yet? What do you mean, no!’

Anyone who’s had a pet probably has many fond memories of them – I had a guinea pig growing up and fondly remember playing with it – but there is the flipside where the animal dies and breaks your heart. Mine did the day before I started secondary school – talk about timing! Marley & Me wants to be the film that shows you the joys of having a pet as long as it’s a dog – all the extra features and John Grogan’s final monologue are all dog-related.

Needless to say, I hated this but I haven’t heard a bad word from anyone else who’s seen it so what do I know? It’s obviously not for me.

Demoncrat 8th August 2018 04:59 PM

Enough with the Aniston!!

I demand to speak of Andy Milligan or Eddie Romero or Shaun Costello :pound:

I seem to be off horror films at the moment. The last one i watched was the recent Arrow release of Hellraiser and that was a couple of weeks ago.

Recent watches have been American Pie: Beta House, American Cheerleader Secrets (With former Dallas star Charlene Tilton playing herself), Dazed and Confused, Bruno and Bring it On.

Whilst the first two are direct to dvd fodder with odd moments of merit, the latter three are all excellent films.

Dazed and Confused is a classic from Richard Linklater sporting one hell of a 70's rock soundtrack as well as a top notch script and cast and is a film i go back to time and time again.

Bruno is Sasha Baron Cohen at his best (or worst) featuring a thoroughly despicable character in Austrian fashion icon Bruno and some of the most Un-PC moments i can recall, whilst Bring it On is an excellent college comedy with two brilliant leads in Kirsten Dunst and Eliza Dushku and is both funny and a fine sports movie at the same time.
