I've always preferred Full Moon, Fred Olen Ray and Jim Wynorski stuff to Troma.

I think the only Troma film i rate is Combat Shock.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 18th February 2019 07:38 AM

I've seen a fair few Troma films and whilst they are certainly a mixed bag, there are a few gems to be found amongst all the crud.

The Children is a decent watch, and more recently There's Nothing Out There surprised me, which I reviewed a couple of pages back.

Silent Hill: Revelation (2012)

Even some fantastic, nightmarish, Barker-esq creatures and a couple of excellent set pieces - The blind nurses and Red Pyramid's asylum arms lopping off - couldn't turn this confused film with a complete lack of scares into anything special.

Even a good cast - Sean Bean, Carrie-Ann Moss, Malcolm McDowell, Radha Mitchell and Deborah Kara Unger - were wasted with what seemed no more than cameo appearances.

Having said that i didn't find this film as infuriating as the first one which was a very good and beautifully atmospheric film which got worse as it went on, as this film wasn't much good to begin with but improved ever so slightly the longer it ran.

I had the first one from 88 Films (steelbook) but after watching it once and thinking it was nothing special, I sold it and haven’t bothered with any of the others, guess they’re an acquired taste

Always wanted to see this when I was a kid after seeing the vhs cover, the 12 year old me might of enjoyed it, but the older and not much wiser found a rather dull film with one or two good deaths. 5/10

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVqMrcakPg0

Now that's was more like it, a bank robber worms his way into a mans home (David Hyde Pierce) saying his a friend of a friend , the robber soon games him prisoner but the tables are quickly turned when the owner of the house is also not what he appears and is a few sandwiches short of picnic. A very fun black comedy with an fantastic performance from Pierce who's also quite the mover. It kind of what would happen if Niles snapped. 9/10

Now watching Black Sunday

Death Smiles on A Murderer.

A sexy young woman called Greta(Eva Aulin) is taken in by a couple at a posh villa after having a accident and devoloping amnesia.

An unusual and pretty stylish effort from the great Joe damato who did the legendary Anthropophagous.
although to be honest though it is rather confusing, with supernatural elements involving bringing the dead back to life and a small role with klaus Kinski as a mad doctor.

overall though, i rather liked it. and is well shot and has a nice soundtrack too. some parts reminded me as well of lucio Fulci's The Psychic with a interesting walling up in the cellar.
And will give mr Damato's gothic giallo effort a respectable 71 out of 100.

The Scotland Yard Mystery (1934)

Lovely Gothic proto Noir about a mad doctor (are there any other kind?) who operates insurance scams by giving his victims a drug which suspends life by putting the recipient into a state of catalepsy, turning them into the living dead.

The Scotland Yard Mystery isn't really a mystery as we know who the villain is in the first act, what it is though is a superior and beautifully macabre thriller with strong Poe influences.

All that lets it down are one or two performances, mainly women, who are too stagy especially in their clipped delivery of dialogue, although i soon got used to it and it didn't really prove too distracting.

Considering it's era and it being British, this is a match for Hollywood of the time.

A Chump in Oxford
Laurel and Hardy are down on their luck and just by prevent a robbery at a bank, as a reward they are sent to Oxford to get educated where they are pranked. It also turns out Laurel is a lord.
Another classic from the duo. Some great little moments, just a shame the dvd I have doesn't give you the option between the US and the European versions of the movie.
The only reason I mention this is that the extra 20 minutes is based on a silent short film they did titled From Soup to Nuts which is a little annoying once you realise this.

The Cut Throats (1969)

A WWII softcore film. Neither as grim or funny as you might imagine.

Piercing (2018)

Hmmm. There's a lot to like here, even if it doesn't add up to much after the fact. Recommended??

Fair Game (1986)

Grittyish thriller as 3 pricks terrorise a lone woman. Not quite as mad as that Naked Vengeance ... it still did the job. Middling nonetheless ...

Tower of Evil (1972)

A film that's chock full of nudity, sex and gruesome violence - and that's just the quieter moments. Heads roll, hands are severed and Robin Askwith's speared by a pagan artifact and that's just for starters.

The story then takes a left turn and decides it wants to be more than just a gory slasher so the script throws in the ancient god Baal - the god of fertility - perhaps that's why there's so much shagging taking place. Whilst it's a little simplistic towards it's pagan rituals it really doesn't matter as the whole thing is so balmy and wildly entertaining.

Demoncrat 20th February 2019 05:12 PM

Love Tower me. Glad you enjoyed it

Sex And Fury (1975)

Revengers don't come much bloodier than this. Asian madness as a traumatic childhood event spurs on a quest for ultimate justice. Slightly stylized fight scenes lift this from curio to a must have for 70s and Oriental fans.

Straw Dogs (Peckinpah)

Lawdy! Meet the neighbours indeed. Dustin Hoffman and his accent move to Wickershire (with Twinky in tow!) where the locals are ... a lively bunch to say the least. A film that still works ... and how. :hail:

The Nail Gun Massacre. 1985.

After a girl is gang raped, someone is using a nail gun to exact revenge on the perpetrators involved.

This was done on a cheap budget that makes it more laughable than horror, the killer's voice is like Darth Vader with a sore throat, the nails looked like rubber, the acting isnt that great that it's like they have no talent if they did have it hidden somewhere. If you want a laugh with a blend of nudity, check it out.

Creepozoids 1987.

A group of survivors from a nuclear war take shelter in a building, unaware it was a government research facility and encounter an alien species.

A salute to the 1950s B movies with this film, the writer and director must have seen too many and thought we can do something like that and created this film. To be honest I enjoyed it, it's not great, filmed with a good steady pace and with Linnea Quigley who can seem to keep her clothes on does save the film from being a disaster, the special effects are not great but they are decent. Worth a look.

Rear Window 1998.

Architect Jason Kemp recently paralysed in a car crash, spies on his neighbours and thinks a man has murdered his wife, with his assistant they try to uncover the truth.

Filmed three years after his horse riding accident Christopher Reeve takes on the role of Jason, with his flat wired with all the technology he needs. Daryl Hannah plays Claudia his assistant with his work and his snooping co spy. There are some tense moments but not as much as the original and some laughter moments, like any other Hitchcock movies that have been remade best stick to the original, any fan of Reeve's as I am it's watchable but not the best.

Joanna(Christina nagy) is paralised in a wheelchair after falling down stairs as a child after being raped by a priest. and years later falls in love with her fitness coach Craig( david Warbeck out of The Beyond. they get married but things take a sinister turn.

Not a bad later day giallo at all, even if the maniac is revealed pretty quickly. and has decent plot twists, creepy dolls and a nice soundtrack, even if some of it has been borrowed from The New York Ripper and Bronx Warriors.
Overall this is a okay watch from director alberto de martino who did The Exorcist rip off The Antichrist. although this is a bit more restrained than that one despite the odd murder or two, and has no goat licking.

Redneck (1973)

Telly Savalas and Franco Nero star as two robbers in the immediate aftermath of a heist gone wrong as they steal a car in order to get away. Unknown to them young Mark Lester is hidden away in the back of the car and the getaway quickly becomes a kidnapping as the duo flee the police.

Redneck is a pacy affair but i feel Savlas who is so OTT sort of let's it down a bit, whereas Nero and Lester form a bond Savalas is like a ticking bomb who shouts, growls and shouts some more. You have to feel for Lester, featuring in debatable scenes in this and the previous years What the Peeper Saw.

Other than that the film is an enjoyable but twisted watch even if it is at times like some sort of travelogue, but the cinematography is good. Not so much a Poliziotteschi, more of a f*cked up road movie (Think Bava's Rabid Dogs and you'll be on the right lines).

Dr Terrors House of Horrors.

Five chaps get on a train and share their compartment with Dr schreck(Peter Cushing), who does a tarot card reading for each of them to predict their future.

This is one of the first anthology films from Amicus and probably their weakest if i'm being honest. but that's not to say it isn't enjoyable, far from it. The cast is great including Christopher Lee and Donald Sutherland.

The first story about an architect chap going to a remote island and finding a werewolf is quite entertaining. but the second one about a killer plant on the rampage is very silly indeed even if it was good for a laugh. the third one is pretty weak too about a trumpet player(roy castle) who steals a voodoo tune and lives to regret it. Things pick up with a well acted role from Chris Lee as a pompous art critic who gets terrorised by a psychotic hand, even if you can tell its made of rubber. the last tale isn't bad either with Donald sutherland discovering that his wife is a vampire and has a good twist in the tale.

overall, these are an okay watch from director Freddie francis, even if Amicus went on to perfect the series with the supperior tales From the Crypt and from Beyond the grave afterwards.

Some great 3D here. More multiple depth of field scenes rather than out of the screen 3D. The depth of field really does go out in to the distance and the out of screen effects involve water sprayed out and wood cuttings from the buzz-saw. Great.

Angel Heart
A private detective is payed to find out if a crooner from before the war is alive or dead and ends up in a world of murder and satanism.
Based on the novel "Falling Angel", its a relatively faithful adaptation, however only part of the movie is set in New York and the rest in Louisiana and there ain't no satanic orgies which is a shame. Still strong performance by Mickey Rooney.
I'll be surprised if no one has seen it, but if you haven't then change that immediately.

Horizons West (1952)

Superior western directed by Budd Boetticher. Starring Robert Ryan and Rock Hudson as two brothers back home in Texas after the civil war where they take two very different paths.

Horizons West is excellent, it's one of those westerns where you can't predict the plot during the first five minutes and all the better for it. The script twists and turns and unexpected event follows unexpected event.

Just to ad to this films's sheer greatness is a top quality support cast including Creature from the Black Lagoon's Julie Adams, John McIntire, Dennis Weaver, James Arness and Perry Mason himself - Raymond Burr.

The films only flaw is that at a mere 80 minutes it's too short.

No spoilers or story give aways, lets just say if you like westerns then watch this.

Satan's Slave (1976)

Poor Candace Glendenning. If she's not being pursued by a murderous mutant round a foggy lighthouse she's being groomed for a devil cult by Martin Potter and Michael Gough.

Directed by the legendary Norman J Warren, Satan's Slave is a sordid exploitation epic chock full of nudity, graphic gore and salacious Occult sacrificial ceremonies.

Satan's Slave is one of those rare examples of a film that actually delivers the goods promised by it's sleazy poster.

The House with 100 Eyes (2012)

A found footage film about a couple of screw balls making a snuff film with three victims could have been good, sadly The House with 100 Eyes failed to live up to it's promise despite a couple of grizzly gore scenes that made me hope for more.

As well as being ultra low budget, although this wasn't really a hindrance, the film suffers from basically, oddities. When making a snuff film would you really blur out any nudity as this film does? It's fine slicing a girls stomach open, but you can't show a guys arse?

The film had a bit of realism in the two protagonists weren't super human, hammer blows hurt them as easily as their victims, but when alls said and done The House with 100 Eyes just isn't very good.

Dawn of The Dead.

Stephen, Francine, and two SWAT chaps Roger and Peter steal a helecopter and bugger off and take refuge in a shopping mall to escape the army of zombies that are taking over the world and eating everybody.

I have to say that this is still a fun watch and very entertaining zombie film. and despite the OTT biker gang and comedy moments, has great characters that you care about.

i will admit that the special effects don't hold up that well anymore and the zombies in particular are quite poor when you compare them to Lucio Fulci's creepy specimims dripping in worms.
most of the ones in Dawn just seem to have been given a quick green spraypaint in a similar style to Jean Rollins Nazi chaps in his classic Zombies Lake.;)

However it's still far more entertaining than most of the so called horror nowadays, and has a fabulous Goblin score as well. And will award this Romero classic a solid 77 out of 100.

Prince of Darkness
A group of scientists are asked to investigate a mysterious jar of green liquid, to discover if it is Satan, only to be plagued by nightmarish visions and crazy homeless people.
John Carpenter proves himself again as a great director with this film, tense and terrifying throughout with a nice slow burn pace which works strongly combine that with Carpenters score (which bares some similarities to Big Trouble in Little China) and what you get is a great horror movie.

Suite Française (2014)

A beautifully crafted WWII drama set, as the Germans begin their French occupation, in a sleepy little town on the outskirts of Paris.

As bad as the occupying forces are everything that happens is down to the gossip and scandal mongers of the town. Whilst early scenes show the beginning of the occupation it's not as harrowing as similar events later in the war as the German soldiers begin a new life in the town and naturally romances bloom with the locals, in particular Michelle Williams and the slightly more er' adventuress and fairly unrecognizable Margot Robbie. Matthias Schoenaerts' Lieutenant who moves in with Williams is depicted with sympathetic care as someone who doesn't really wish to be involved in the Nazi occupation but even his confused loyalty to the Reich is put to the test when Williams decides to help a typically mumbling Sam Reilly escape the town when a manhunt begins.

Suite Francaise has an old fashioned feel to it and at times comes across as a slightly racier version of the classic tv series Secret Army or Enemy at the Door, but it's well acted and had a script which ensured my attention.

The Pit And The Pendulum 1991.

Spain 1492, during the witch hunt Spanish inquisitor Torquemada imprisons a young girl believing her to be a witch but is more mesmerised by her and believes she is using magic on him.

Based on the story by Edgar Allen Poe, this was a decent movie about the famous inquisitor and his method of torture and madness. Lance Henriksen plays the lead pretty well even offscreen he stayed in character and had some mad moments in public. Jeffrey Combs appears in a small role but his talents weren't wasted and Mark Margolis appears and seems to enjoy using his whip. Stuart Gordon did a good job of been giving a low budget and create this film, may not be a masterpiece but it's worth a watch. 7 out of 10.

IT (1967)

Weirdo museum curator Roddy McDowall ignores advice and brings an ancient Golem statue to life. He uses the Golem for his own ends before realising that the Golem has to be destroyed..

Quite a strange film this one. Roddy McDowall is a Norman Bates type character who keeps his mothers corpse at home while dressing her with gems from his museum.
Neither really creepy or atmospheric, the Golem statue does look good though. The music by Carlo Martelli is almost a note for note copy of his score for Hammer Films 'Blood From The Mummy's Tomb'.
A low budget oddball curiosity British horror that is worth checking out.

The Dark (1979)

A largely uneventful sci-fi horror film in which an unscary alien with red eyeballs tears off victims heads before disintegrating them with a laser.

The type of film they don't really make these days. Low budget fantasy with a decent cast of players - William Devane, Richard Jeackel and Keenan Wynn give gravitas whilst Cathy Lee Crosby runs round Tinseltown looking perplexed. It's the actors and the performances that make a film like this worth watching and the dialogue is a high point.

However the whole thing is let down by motiveless killings and we never see anything of the creature in what amounts to a Jack the Ripper style police investigation.

Disappointing yet good at the same time.

At a private party a director is showing an early screening of his latest horror film based on the true story of his ancestor who was burned at the stake for witchcraft. Once the film is over someone at the party tries to show of his skills of hypnosis by putting his girlfriend under his spell which is proven to be just a scam but he is determined to prove he has a gift and is convinced to hypnotise the directors cousin which back fires horrible when she tries to cut her cousin down with a broadsword. Was this a result of hypnosis or are there a more diabolic presence within the house.

What starts as a supernatural horror suddenly morphs into a slasher with woman getting chased through the woods and taken down with a butcher knife after a few more deaths it more reminiscent of a gallio then we are once again thrown back into a supernatural horror again. It really is a mixed bag and it seems like the director was a bit lost in his vision switching direction so quickly.

When it comes to the kills I really enjoyed them they do happen in a flurry of flashing blades but the pay off and a very blood soaked corpse which is always great

A big standout for me was the lighting the use of colour really popped in some of the scenes and looked beautiful feeling like an Argento of a Bava film.

I would of prefered a straight up supernatural affair but Terror is still an entertaining film at the end of the day just a little more focus would of made it flow a bit better.

The Brain Machine (1955)

A taught Brit Noir about a doctor taken hostage by a smuggler after she discovers via a new brain research experiment that he's psychotic.

This isn't science fiction, the brain machine of the title is only in this film during the opening scenes as it becomes clear that a new patient (Maxwell Reed) has something wrong with him. The bulk of the film is a crime thriller that zips along at a breathless twisty turny pace.

Elizabeth Allan is a strong female lead for the most part but ultimately gets lost in the mayhem as the thoughtful plot makes way for shoot outs with the police.

All in all, The Brain Machine is a fine example of a pulpy British crime thriller.

Carol Lynley returns to her isolated mill house home after many years away.
The locals give warnings to stay away from the mill, with talk of a curse. She and her husband are constantly intimidated by Oliver Reed and his group of thugs while something is lurking, chained in the room upstairs..

I had not seen this movie in many years so was good to watch again.
The old mill looks very creepy and is quite atmospheric inside.
Oliver Reed, his sex starved mates and his pursuit of Carol Lynley do take up a lot of screen time, but the main story is wrapped around and it all comes together nicely for the fiery climax.
