Favourite Childhood TV and Films

I noticed a lot of people got into talking about their favourite shows as kids on other threads. So I thought why not create a new thread solely for this purpose.

Does anyone remember Bravestarr? I used to love this cartoon as a kid. It really was essential viewing for me.

What are your favourite childhood TV shows or films and why?

i remember brave star, he had an awesome gun, and his horse had a shot gun.
thats right his HORSE had a SHOTGUN.

This was on around the same time as Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors and Galaxy Rangers, 80s cartoons ruled, none of this In the night garden crap they have for kids these days. the only thing we 80s kids had that was educational was Stop, Look and listen and a bit of rainbow at lunch times.

Kids don't know what they missed these days...

About In the night garden? has anyone seen this, if you haven't you should really check it out and see if you can understand what the hell is going on...

Yeah his horse was like a talking half robot half horse with a gun. I actually had the toys too, god knows what happened to them, bootsale most probably. I've read online that they made a feature length animated film of Bravestarr and it's meant to be brilliant. Might have to find it and have a walk down memory lane again.

Never heard of In The Night Garden, bit too modern for me I think ;)

I used to watch a cartoon called Ulysses 31. Anyone remember this? I even remember the theme tune, I'm singing it now
It was always on about 6am so me and my brother used to get up really early and sneak downstairs to watch it before we went to school. Oh the easy days of life

I remember it very well me & my brother used to watch it too. It was based on the ancient Greek poem The Odyssey which was attributed to the Greek poet Homer, but was set far in the future, in space which I thought was a brilliant concept! :thumb:

I believe it was a co-French/Japanese production and was readily available on DVD in the UK (my brother bought the boxset) but I believe it's now deleted & sells in excess of £50 from certain marketplace traders.

oaxaca 9th April 2010 01:00 PM

I really like Ulysses 31 :D

My childhood favourites were:

The Real Ghostbusters
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
Thundercats
He-Man
The Visionaries
Defenders of the Earth
Fresh Prince of Bel Air
Knightmare!
Art Attack/finders keepers (neil buchanan)
Timmy Mallet
Funhouse with the legendary Pat Sharp
and of course WWF wrestling!!

I was also addicted to Home and Away & Shortland Street (anyone remember that!?) when I was a kid, which is wierd cause soap operas bore the crap out of me now!)
I used to hate CBBC (especially Blue Peter) with a passion and love CITV :p

Used to love The Lone Ranger & Rawhide & Lost in Space ("Never fear, Smith is here!" :p) & Planet of the Ape re-runs on sundays as a kid.

Ahh happy memories

ps. Unfortunately I was too young for Magnum PI and Quincy ME but I have since made up for lost time :D

pedromonkey 9th April 2010 03:13 PM

i remember shortland street, it was set in an australian hospital right...i wasn't a big fan of CITV but enjoyed art attack and Woof, CBBC was the coolest in the early to mid 90s withc shows such as Bodger and badger, MUD (with a young Russell Brand), Pirates of darkwater, peter pan and the pirates and maid marion and her merry men...oh the memories

sooty was on ITV with Matthew Corbit, when they introduced little cousin Scampy the show went down hill....CBBC used to get the australian kids shows like Round the twist and The girl from tomorrow (i think that's what its called) but itv had the tomorrow people.

i was close with shortland street i remembered it was in a hospital, i used to watch Flying Doctors alot as kid on bbc 1 on a sunday night...

Oh yeah, Round the Twist, now that was some ****ed up stuff. Another weird classic is Eerie Indiana. I keep meaning to buy the boxset but when I go shopping I forget all about it. Might have a look online now actually.

pedromonkey 9th April 2010 04:55 PM

funny you mention Eerie indiana, im halfway through watching it at the moment, it must have been at least 10 years since i'd seen it and i remember every episode so far. Joe Dante Directed the pilot and some other episodes as well as being creative consultant and the great dick miller who never ages showed up in one. Absolute classic show, shame it got cancelled after 19 episodes...

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 9th April 2010 05:04 PM

Oh dear.All you younglings.

Nobody else remember Stig of the Dump or how about The Red Hand Gang?

Gigantor 9th April 2010 05:37 PM

Antmumford don't know if you know or not but the 2 Seasons of BLACKSTARR are availible on DVD.

Pedromonkey,Yeah iliked EERIE INDIANA as well I think one of the major reasons iit didn't do so well and got cancelled was was when it originally aired they moved it all different day and different times.

Did you see the second series EERIE INDIANA :The Other Dimension?

pedromonkey 9th April 2010 05:54 PM

the one that got cancelled after 8 episodes in 1995?...no never did...

Omri Katz who played Marshal Teller in the original series is now a hair dresser. random or what?

darthelvis 10th April 2010 07:49 AM

Loved Monkey and Diff'rent Strokes growing up and still love them now. Cartoon wise, loved GI Joe, M.A.S.K. Thundercats, TMNT, Transformers, Ewoks and Droids.

TV, The worlds cheapest Babysitter:laugh:

42ndStreetFreak 13th April 2010 04:25 PM

A couple of films that stood out were -
"The Amazing Mr Blunden" (superlative kids ghost story with a top cast) and "Escape from the Dark" (top notch tearjerker about pit ponies).

On TV I used to like "Pitkins", "Robbie's Robots", "Michael Bentine's Potty Time", "The Double Deckers", "Banana Splits", "Fingermouse", "Robinson Crusoe", "The Flashing Blade".

That's late childhood TV as opposed to teenage years TV.

Absolutely agree. Blunden was a superb film and this, together with The Railway Children, proves what a splendid director Lionel Jeffries was (we'll ignore Wombling Free).

I really aught to be embarrassed of myself. I watched too much television. I can't believe I made into adulthood.

Richcrue 13th April 2010 08:44 PM

I dont have a particular favourite memory of any childhood tv/film viewing but I remember vividly The singing ringing tree,I`m sure it was split into 3 or 4 episodes on BBC way back in the day, very surreal and quite frightening in a fairytale kinda way.

vincenzo 13th April 2010 10:01 PM

Saturday mornings for me comprised of the Mr Men, Robinson Crusoe (interspersed on occasions with The Flashing Blade), the Double Deckers and the legend that was Tiswas.

Can't be worse than the original Multi-Coloured Swap Shop with that odious Noel Edmonds and his talking chimp Keith Chegwin. :ack:

Magpie was another after-school favourite on ITV.

I first saw this doubled with Chariots Of Fire, and found Gregory far superior. Great fun (and a very risque 'A'/PG indeed) and still a terrific film today.

Talking of All Things Scots, Comfort And Joy and (especially) Local Hero were also excellent films.

Vampix 20th May 2010 03:08 AM

I remember Restless Natives had a great Big Country soundtrack.I'm also a big fan of Gregory's Girl, hilarious film and as for Claire Grogan, phwooar! :D
