Clive Barker's Nightbreed The Cabal Cut Getting Closer!

Just a heads up to any one interested, apologies if raised recently. A quote from the man himself........

“My friends, Clive here, writing to share some wonderful news. Following the two Sold Out screenings of NIGHTBREED: The Cabal Cut on Sunday, Morgan Creek has given us permission to show the cut around the world and to raise money to prepare the cut for a release on Blu Ray.

This could not, would not have happened without your voices. We have all been heard. The Morgan Creek team have my thanks and my respect. Very seldom does anyone in the movie business pay attention as they have, understanding perhaps that the message of the movie as I shot it is one that dramatizes a different ending to the age-old story of how a war between Humankind and something Other draws to a close.

The real NIGHTBREED will be available for everyone to see. I hope its message of redemption and forgiveness move you.”

Fans of Nightbreed and Clive Barker have been excited about The Cabal Cut, an extended version of the movie that has been screening at a couple of recent horror conventions. We have good news from Clive Barker, who let everyone know that Morgan Creek gave them permission to raise funds for a Blu-ray release.

I for one can not wait!

Fantastic youv'e seen it, how about a review?

I put it on here as an update that its coming to Blu-ray, it did the rounds at cinemas worldwide to garnish feedback to see if it would be worth dropping on Blu-ray, apparently its worked a treat, this is off bloodydisgusting website, if you already know this, once again apologies but some people obviously find it useful!...........

The last we’d heard about “Cabal Cut” of Clive Barker’s Nightbreed Morgan Creek had given the filmmakers permission “to show the cut around the world and to raise money to prepare the cut for a release on Blu-ray… This could not, would not, have happened without your voices. We have all been heard. The Morgan Creek team have my thanks and my respect. Now Michael Plumides has posted in the comments section of the Occupy Midian Facebook, “Russell, you said you didn’t expect anything before 2014, remember? Well, it looks like the distribution deal is moving forward. Our distributors are presently at Cannes but we will resume talks when they return – we probably will not make the announcement until the Fall. Also we have a channel very interested in the TV show. Stay tuned.” It’s hard to suss out exactly what all of this means – especially the bit about the TV show – but at least the mood seems positive.

To clarify about Warner Bros. rights he added, “The Cabal Cut” is a separate film all together. Warner has no control over this film – the added footage makes it a completely different product.” ......still can't wait!!:tongue1:

oh come on, take it the way it was intended ;)

the info from your first post comes direct from Clive's Twitter, and was posted a year ago, so I think it's fair to call it old news... the info you've just put up now is more recent, and good to hear!

I'm no reviewer, but I will tell you that the new cut is completely faithful to the book, and I think gives a better portrait of Midian. problem is, the new 'found footage' currently resembles a home video shot on a '90s camcorder, and I fear for just how much quality they can get out of it. Russell Cherrington did assure us at the screening that it could be brought up to a reasonable standard, but that baking the film was going to be a very large expense, hence the distributors' need for proof that there would be a market for it

Dave Boy 16th May 2013 09:56 PM

Awesome ! Looking forward to this.

Frankenhooker 16th May 2013 10:28 PM

I'm really looking forward to this, as long as the materials are there for a decent release. I loved the novella and Barker's film, I even loved the old game on the Commodore Amiga.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 16th May 2013 10:32 PM

Superb!

Scyther 16th May 2013 11:42 PM

Really great news. I've never seen the Cabal cut, but I love the original as is, so I can only imagine what an extended version of Nightbreed will be like!

gag 17th May 2013 02:22 AM

Everyone talking about it makes me want to watch it now, to be honest I've only seen it once and that was a few years ago. And I can't REALY remember anything about it.

Didnt take it anyway? Just saying that I have been on here and picked up very usefull information that is over a year old that I did not know and thats why I root around the various threads as I do not know everything and there is some very knowledgeable people on here, and if it is useful to one person then job done, thats what this sites here for!

Totally agree with you, I have heard the dropped in extra footage is vhs quality and looks quite bad, hopefully they can restore this for the Blu Ray edition to an acceptable level. I have also read that the Dr Decker story, why he kills, why he hates Boone etc is not elaborated on as I believe Cronenberg's killer is ruthless and brutal.....yet wasted. Could of had a spin off movie line me thinks? Can not wait for this, saw it on cinema for original release and it is so unique, yes it has its flaws but what the hell, its a bonkers film!

Robert W 1st June 2013 08:37 PM

The plan, last time I heard, was to search for the original missing 35mm footage and restore it. Barring that, the VHS footage will be used instead. The price I heard the VHS restoration will cost is something like $50,000. As to why Barker himself just doesn't pay to have it done is beyond me though, as it's his baby.

Delirium 1st June 2013 09:17 PM

Yeah, I saw the Cabal Cut at the cinema too, so looking forward to this. It's one where the extra footage is certainly worthwhile - there's far more character depth and reasoning behind motives as already mentioned. And loads more of Midian, which really enhances the madness - including fun stop-motion dinosaur thing. It's more of the book, basically.

But yes, the VHS footage stands out like a sore thumb. You grow accustomed to it, but it will need some serious work if the whole thing is going to hit blu ray.

Vampix 3rd June 2013 11:36 AM

I've read Barker's novel, Cabal, and seen the edited original film, Nightbreed, a couple of times.I've never been too impressed with the film but I enjoyed the novel.I'd probably seek out a director's cut of the movie just to see what all the fuss is about.Who knows, I may enjoy it a lot more with the additional footage. :)

The Cabal Cut contains something like 45 mins of extra footage and is, from the accounts of those whom I know who've seen it, a vast improvement over the original theatrical cut. Decker, I'm told, has more screen time, thankfully, and the new ending is much more satisfactory.

Cabal Cut to be released by Shout Factory :woot:

Great choice there. Shout/Scream Factory puts out a very nice product from what I've seen. Hopefully, they'll have plenty of extras lined up as well. Would love to hear a cast commentary with Cronenberg on board.

Rik 30th October 2013 12:38 PM

It's old news, but it looks likely that we'll get a DVD of this here in the UK at some point in the future, and rightly so too seeing as Clive is British and so is Russell Cherrington, who has spearheaded the restoration of the Cabal Cut.
I would've picked up the US release, but I'd rather give my brass to a UK company

I thought the shout factory was a blu ray release.

No, as far I know from reading this and other articles, the materials aren't good enough for a blu ray release. I'm just happy that it'll see the light of day, regardless of format, I've waited years to see Barker's true version of the film (or as near as possible to his vision anyway)

Agree. Heard the rumours that barker will be directing a new hellraiser movie?

I have indeed, with Doug Bradley reprising the role that made him too :woot:

If Clive Barker gives this forthcoming 'director's cut' of Nightbreed his seal of approval I'll be quite happy.

keirarts 3rd February 2014 07:17 AM

Well i've posted this on other Nightbreed threads so may as well put it here.

If the extra footage comes from VHS, there will be no Blu-ray of the Cabal cut. Just a dvd release as using the VHS tapes would involve 'baking the tapes' in order to improve the quality. Unfortunately this would still mean material unsuitable for a HD release.

IF as the OP quote from Barker states, the money is there, then they are looking to go through the studio archives in a bid to locate the missing footage which may still exist in some cans somewhere.

If the original materials can be located then expect a blu-ray release with lots of extras.

I saw the Cabal cut a couple of years back at Grimmfest in Manchester and it is a really, really improved cut of the film. We have Decker talking to his mask, not actually wanting to kill people but the mask itself is compelling him (well he is a nutter after all) there's more creature effects, more verything.

Fantastic news, it's like they knew I'd already planned on wearing my Nightbreed shirt for tomorrow nights gig

So this one will feature 12 more minutes (in vhs quality) than the Scream Factory release?

The Cabal cut is 25 minutes longer than the directors cut but 12 minutes of the footage will still be vhs quality.

Ah, ok. Think I'll just stick with my SF disc.

Rik 14th July 2017 10:00 AM

The article says they're using the best available materials, but as far as I know only VHS materials exist for the extra footage.
I love the SF set with both versions, but I've wanted to see the Cabal Cut for ages, so I'll be picking this up

Stephen@Cult Labs 14th July 2017 10:07 AM

Confused now. That article says the Cabal Cut is 145 minutes and 12 of that will be vhs quality (at least that's how I read it). I thought the Cabal Cut was 160 minutes?

I find when films have edited in footage from poor quality sources they really grate with me. See Shameless and Top Sensation as a reference. Takes me out of the zone completely.

I bet they look awful when it happens on blu-rays.

Seems like it, unless it's going to be a mix of all the versions out there. It's gonna end up like Blade Runner
