Not really a monster, but he did haunt people's dreams in later movies.

I once went to a Halloween party as Coffin Joe, but no-one knew who he was...

...it was at this point I realised that I was a horror film geek. :D

Sobral 13th August 2013 11:38 AM

Got any pics? :D
The guy who played the young CJ on the latest movie did an amazing job looking like him:

Unfortunately not - it was a good few years ago now (when I was at university in 2003ish).

That is a pretty good likeness! I didn't have the medallion, but had the other components. I think most people just thought I was a creepy undertaker who hadn't trimmed his fingernails. Although, to be fair, that could have been said about me for the other 364 days of the year, too. :tongue1: ;)

Heard of him but never seen any of the movies, is the coffin joe box set worth picking up?

I'd definitely say it was (despite a few iffy transfers) if you can get it cheap enough.

Some of the later films are more 'spin-offs' rather than sequels, though. The more 'official' films are the first two: 'At Midnight I Will Take Your Soul' and 'This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse', and the much later (2008) film 'Embodiment of Evil' - which isn't in the boxset, but can be picked up separately for a reasonable price.

I enjoy all the films in the set in varying degrees, and all have their merits, but if you've never had any exposure to him before, I'd maybe recommend you check out some of the clips and trailers on Youtube before you buy, as his films can be an acquired taste.

The whole boxset for a fiver is a bargain! The first film alone is worth more than that.

Never seen any myself, but the boxset has been on my wish list ever since a member here (probably Slippery Jack) created an artwork depicting him

I absolutely love it. Cushing and Lee's onscreen chemistry in this is just so enjoyable to watch. Plus on top of that you have a claustrophobic creature feature crossed with a 'whodunit' murder mystery with sci-fi overtones. Oh, AND Telly Savalas.

Rik 13th August 2013 01:27 PM

Yep, absolute gem of a film

Love the whole series, and ironically the weakest movie has the best Knights scene, when they emerge from the sea with water coming from the empty eye sockets, just amazing.

As Bizarre_Eye said, the movies have many flaws and if you were paying full price I'd say watch one first, but for a fiver it's no big loss.
Keep in mind that the movies are poorly presented in the AB box (poor prints, lazy chapter-separation, bad audio on Finni Hominis...), I have them in other editions and all the others are superior, still that is the most acessible way to see them currently.

I still remember the very first time I caught This Night... on television, I was immediately hooked and couldn't believe a character from the 60's speaking so openly against organized religion.

This is outdated by now, but here's a crappy video I made some time ago with my CJ stuff:
