DVD & Blu Ray World Magazine

Does anyone buy this monthly Magazine. I used to buy Video World yrs ago and i still have a few copies. I have bought DVD & Blu Ray World for the last 6 mths and although i don't find it amazing value for money it can have the odd few articles and also monthly DVD every issue.

What are YOUR Thoughts on this Mag?

By the way the Current issue has 2/3 GREAT Adverts from Arrow Titles. FULL PAGES.

Free DVD is Night of the Hunted (Jean Rollin's) Starring Brigitte Lahaie

I saw this magazine in an awesome film shop in Covent Garden, was thinking of picking it up as it had a Blood Feast 2/ House by the Cemetary double presentation DVD with it.
Not bad for just £3.75 a month. I'm currently subscribed to Empire but this magazine is more along the lines of good horror and stuff which I'm much more in to.
I might subscribe on payday. Thanks for the heads up

Although Blood Feast 2 is free to view, some users have reported that to watch House By The Cemetery you have to text/phone a number and purchase a viewing code (for £5).

The same applied with their disc of Sleepless (free)/Day Of The Dead 2: Contagium (pay to view).

Be wary of these discs.

antmumford 17th March 2010 12:27 PM

Oh dear, well at least Blood Feast 2 was free. Better than nothing. What a con though, that is rather cheeky. Looking at their back catalogue they've had some other good DVD's too.

vincenzo 17th March 2010 12:34 PM

I haven't bought any of these myself so I'm only going on feedback. The phrasing was very poor and misleading to say the least though.

Whether the policy has now changed I don't know. The current film is definitely free to view though.

Pete 17th March 2010 12:38 PM

Most of their dvds have been free, but yeah House by the Cemetery and Sleepless were pay to view.

Yes it's a good idea to be wary of these and check the small print first. At least the newspaper 2-on-1 promo discs definitely give you both films free. :ohwell:

Ken 17th March 2010 03:05 PM

Yeah very true about the Viewing code, But tbf they do have this displayed clearly on the Magazine & DVD cover. Most are available free though its only 2 out of the last 6 issues i have that have done this.

Like i said though its not a great magazine but with a DVD free its not a total rip off, and it can give you some decent reviews. I guess its down to individual opinion & Choice at the end of the day. Guess you could say its like Marmite some will love, some will hate it...

Philleh 17th March 2010 03:11 PM

And besides, back when it was DVD World they'd normally give you an 18 rated porno as the free disc! ha ha. They've come along way since then!

Richcrue 17th March 2010 06:25 PM

I think its a great mag, been buying it for ages, even back in the 80`s as Videoworld .Allan Bryce is a clued up dude, some of the dvds arent the best quality to be honest, especially some of the salvation/Redemption discs,Jean Rollins Killing Car being a prime example.
Still you cant really go too wrong for a fiver, they have just dropped the "restricted" porny bit at the back of the mag, which is good coz I can leave it lying about the house without fear of my kids looking at it.

Philleh 17th March 2010 06:54 PM

Aww maaaan, I used to enjoy reading the smutty pages in the back! ha ha.

broonage 18th March 2010 08:16 AM

Bring back the Darkside!

Ken 18th March 2010 11:48 AM

It definately looks like this mag is gonna go through some major changes soon, Inc a NEW Cult section. I am gonna send Allan Bryce a Email and congratulate him on this move forward and suggest he takes a look over on here (if he has'nt already done so).
On the not so bright side it appears they are gonna produce more Dual DVD's in the future where 1 is free and the other will be Code locked payable for £5 approx. Not a good move in opinion, they should stick to the single movie with an old budget Cult movies instead. just my opinion...

Splatterdragon73 28th March 2010 09:27 AM

To be honest i'm pleased the smut section of the mag has been shown the door and personally i'd like to see the back of the video games column too. It just leaves extra room for more DVD and BR reviews and news on upcoming film releases. Fine by me!:)

broonage 29th March 2010 08:44 AM

(A post i made from another topic here about the Darkside)
I emailed Byrcey to find out what was happening.
They said they'd come back in the new year...yeah right! They ran away with some of my sub money!!

I have almost every issue, i have supported them for years, yet he doesn't have the politeness to reply to my mail!!

Am I thinking of another magazine, when it was Video World was this the mag that featured a lot of nudity in it ?

Ken 29th March 2010 09:49 AM

There the same mag Steve mate, Video World to DVD World to DVD & Blu Ray World. Totally agree about the Crap in the back if you want porn you go buy a mag with it in. If you buy a DVD mag you want DVD's in simple.
Although my understanding is the Back section helped fund the mag with its advertising, What happens now im not sure.

Stephen@Cult Labs 29th March 2010 10:34 AM

Haven't seen the mag in years.Funny the things you remember. :D

lmao Well i Never, I have Just bought Issue 85 (Current Issue of DVD & Blu Ray World) and low and behold my Email is published in the Letters Page. It gives my opinion on the mag and Promotes the hell out of this forum, In which Bryce replied that he has visited the forum after i sent him the link.

The Letter is on page 16+17 entitled "CULT FAVORITE"

Philleh 28th June 2010 03:47 PM

Ha, that's quality. Well done on the plug, Ken! :thumb:

Pete 28th June 2010 03:53 PM

Well done Ken. I remember I had a letter published in Darkside back in 2006.

Whats this month's 'freebie'?

Penitentiary (Jamaa Fanaka)

And the Locked film (£5) Fritz the Cat (Animated Adult movie)

Philleh 28th June 2010 04:24 PM

I might have to grab that issue! Loves me some Jamaa Fanaka.

broonage 29th June 2010 10:05 AM

I emailed Alan Bryce again, still no reply about my Darkside sub. He's nicked my cash, i'm going to investigate trading standards.

Seriously peeved, I have almost every issue (which is quite something, we're talking about a squillion issues since 1990!! I'm missing around 10 of them), i have almost all the books, and subbed with them for years. Even with the piracy scandle I continued to support them although i admit i had a little of a bad taste in my mouth. I even had several letters printed throughout the years too!!
Yet Bryce can't even reply to my email.

My advice (letter printed or not) is to avoid his DVD and Blue Ray World magazine until he comes clear with his past ventures. If he has no respect to dedicated fans like myself, well frankly, and rather regrettably he has lost a customer.

If he just pinged me with a msg then perhaps i wouldn't be so annoyed. Hope he reads this!

Ken 29th June 2010 10:19 AM

I can understand you been annoyed mate, Is there no Telephone No available so you can ring and speak direct to him and sort the problem out.

Well DS have secretly hidden all contact info (but can be found via google) from their site. I must have phoned their phoneline 10 times since i received their letter. The first time I couldn't leave a msg as the box was full, the welcome message was change several times to laughable excuses (holiday etc.). Now when you phone it says all the operators are busy where in fact there was only ever one person (Jemma) who dealt with everything.

I have also emailed Jemma (who normally replied the same day), no reply!
So i think it is safe to say we can forget that! Nevertheless I phoned them today and left a msg again.

In my eyes they just don't care.

DVD World is going back to covering more culty stuff, thank goodness!

Dear Readers,

We would like to inform you that we have taken on board your comments on the ‘new look' DVD and Blu-ray World and in an effort to give you exactly the magazine that you want we have decided to delay publication for one month.

This hard decision has been taken to work on getting rid of unpopular more ‘mainstream' features such as the hardware and gadget reviews and the games section and replacing these with the kind of cult horror and sexy material that you so obviously want.

The general consensus of opinion has been that by abandoning its roots as a cult flavoured alternative to more mainstream DVD Review mags, our title has alienated many valued long-term readers.

We cannot afford to let this continue, and therefore we have delayed publication of issue 86 for a revamp of content, taking it back to the way it was. This will not affect your subscription rights, but sadly you will have to go a month without receiving a copy of the magazine.

We will also be addressing the cover mount situation. Some of you have expressed disappointment that recent free discs have not been in the sex/horror genre that readers seem to prefer.

This will be rectified in future. Issue 86 will have Russ Meyer's Mondo Topless as a cover mount, and we intend to follow this up with single disc goodies like Jean Rollin's The Escapees and Two Orphan Vampires.

It is never a good thing for a magazine to miss a publication date, but in this instance we feel we would have been ignoring the demands of our readership if we had continued to forge on in the wrong direction.

We trust you will understand our decision and stick with us as we continue to strive to make DVD and Blu-Ray World Britain's most entertaining and unusual home entertainment magazine
.

Well that's bloody good of them, another company who listen to the fans ;)

wayfarer 9th July 2010 02:00 PM

I guess these guys realise that physical magazines are dying out and the existing readship need to get the product they want.

I was stunned looking at Gorezone this lunchtime, or GH as it's now known!

Good news this and i certainly won't miss the hardware or gaming sections. The more exploitation and cult coverage the better!

I'll probably pass on the MT cover disc to a mate of mine who likes Meyer's movies and the Rollin DVD will be dispensed with in due course, too.:)

Ken 13th July 2010 10:47 PM

So basically its going back to be a Porn Mag.

broonage 14th July 2010 08:55 AM

i say boycott the bams!

Like Zoo or Nuts for us movie geeks?;)

Splatterdragon73 14th July 2010 10:23 AM

I hope we're going to see a clampdown on Franco, Rollin and Redemption output appearing as cover DVDs. DVD&BRW has bombarded us with enough of this stuff in the past and surely there's other exploitation and cult titles Allan Bryce could lay his hands on.

Personally, i am sick and tired of seeing obscure oddities from the above three sources given away with the mag in question. Enough is enough imo.:)

Ken 14th July 2010 12:04 PM

I certainly won't be buying another issue, If i wanted a porn mag then i'd buy one. waste of £5 imo.

Splatterdragon73 15th July 2010 01:35 PM

Imo keep all the hardware, gaming and smut stuff out and use the extra space for even more exploitation and cult cinema exposure.
Maybe expand the Disc Detective and Choice Cuts sections. More DVD and BR reviews are a must for me though so bring 'em on!:)

stefanmetal 2nd November 2011 10:14 PM

Hs the magazine folded or something because they never released an issue 92 and it's been a long time now since no. 91. Anyone care to share any knowledge?

broonage 2nd November 2011 10:18 PM

Big mention in the latest issue of DS about this. I think he wants to keep it going.
