Bigfoot Horror Movies!!

After watching the weird and wonderful SHRIEK OF THE MUTILATED last night I became inspired to start a thread dedicated to these Bigfoot films.

So what have I seen? Well for a start one of the earlier ones is Hammer's THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN which though ain't great it ain't bad either and features good acting performances and some stunning cinematography. There is of course reaper's favourite movie NIGHT OF THE DEMON which is a trash classic. CREATURE FROM BLACK LAKE is a brilliant little movie which is as much about friendship as it is Yetis. THE LEGEND OF BIGFOOT ('76) is a hilarious mockumentary by Ivan Marx which I think was later exposed as a hoax though don't let that put you off as it's a stunning film. SNOWBEAST is a neat TV movie that's worth checking out and last night's viewing of SHRIEK OF THE MUTILATED was fantastic. It has to be seen by any self respecting trash movie fan.

They aren't all good though and films like TERROR IN THE SWAMP, BOGGY CREEK II and SNOW CREATURE are painfully bad films.

I'm currently working my way through Retromedia's Bigfoot Terror set, it contains 4 films (Shriek Of The Mutilated / Capture Of Bigfoot / Search For The Beast / Legend Of Bigfoot '76) and can be imported for cheap.

So yeah, favourite Bigfoot movies? Why do you like/dislike them? Recommendations and comments on availability? Anything else? Discuss.

P.S. and though I'm not a firm believer, I am open minded to the existence of Bigfoot.

Halloween_22 16th November 2008 02:02 PM

Theres one I've been meaning to pick up on R1 called 'Abominable' which I believe is out on Anchor Bay. It's from 2006, I read about it in fango a while back. Looks like its definately worth checking out.

Night of the Demon and Snowbeast are great trash films. Really enjoyed both of them. Think I might have to pick up that Bigfoot terror boxset you mentioned as I wouldn't mind seeing them, especially 'Shriek of the mutilated'.

cloud 16th November 2008 03:10 PM

The Bigfoot Terror set is going for under a fiver on Amazon Marketplace and it's being sold by Caiman so you're guaranteed a fast delivery. I remember hunting down the Pre-Cert of Shriek and was willing to pay a tenner or more for it. But here it's restored, has all the gore reinserted and comes with 3 bonus films (one of which is the classic Marx Bigfoot mockumentary), I've not seen the other two yet though. What are you waiting for? Order it now! ;)

Oh and the Sasquatch Horror set (again by Retromedia) is going for the same price. Snow Creature is very boring and I already have 2 prints of Snowbeast (VIPCO and Mill Creek) but it's probably worth getting alone for SASQUATCH: THE LEGEND OF BIGFOOT. I recently watched the trailer for it and it looks brilliant.

I too heard positive reviews of Abominable. It's on me wishlist and I'll get it one day.

The former video nasty The Werewolf And The Yeti is another Bigfoot film that hasn't had a UK release as yeti. http://www.shameless-films.com/forum...es/biggrin.gif

mark meakin 16th November 2008 07:31 PM

Abominable has been shown on the Sci-Fi Channel along with another bigfoot film featuring Lance Henriksen,Devil On The Mountain.Abominable a reworking of the legendary Hitchcock film Rear Window is hugely entertaining though DOTM is a disappointment.I've always had a soft spot for Snowbeast since I first watched it on a saturday evening as a young lad, when ITV used to screen TV creature features about 7.30 in the evening including Tarantulas -The Deadly Cargo & Ants ! (aka Panic At Lakewood Manor)Both of the later films are also available in nice looking prints on r1.The Werewolf & The Yeti is pretty awful & undeserving of its original"nasty" status though I would love a dvd of it for nostalgic reasons. The Abominable Snowman (1956) from Hammer is still one of the best & most intelligent of the films about the legendary Yeti but Legend Of Boggy Creek used to creep me out as a kid on its BBC 2 screenings. The Creature From Black Lake (1976) is probably one of the best 'Bigfoot' movies which screens on Zone Horror in a version vastly superior to the blurry pan & scan UK dvd.I would also highly recommend the exceptionally creepy TV movie A Cold Nights Death (1973) starring Robert Culp & Eli Wallach as two research scientists in a remote arctic laboratory who think they are being watched by 'something'.I won't give away the plot but it's very atmospheric.

cloud 16th November 2008 09:03 PM

How could I forget WEREWOLF AND THE YETI? Especially after I've requested a DVD release so many times. It's a bad film I agree but it's also strangely engaging and the final battle is such a disappointment but also fascinating at the same time. Viva Paul Naschy!

I love Creature From Black Lake but I've never seen a good print of it. Unfortunately it's one that I can't see getting a proper release because it's so minor but it really is a wonderful little film.

Alright so I've just watched another couple from this Bigfoot Terror set. THE CAPTURE OF BIGFOOT is tremendous fun and never has a dull moment. But SEARCH FOR THE BEAST is one of the worst films I've ever sat through. It has lots of big baps, some hillbilly banjo playing, a Bigfoot rape scene and a David Friedman cameo but don't let that fool you. It's an appalling SOV atrocity that has a crap plot, crap editing, crap special effects and was painful to sit through, Andreas Schnaas would have been proud of it. Thankfully it was only 69 minutes long though.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0129358/

Check its IMDb page, it has a score of 1.4/10 and that is generous! It looked way out of place in this Bigfoot set.

So Bigfoot Terror in my opinion contains 2 classics, 1 very entertaining potboiler and 1 of the worst films ever made. £6 well spent I reckon . It's worth it alone for the Yeti chasing scene in Shriek Of The Mutilated when he shouts to Bigfoot "get back here you fool!" :D.

Abominable is lots of fun, with a laugh out loud/jawdropper ending. Take yer pick.
Throw in a few bloody deaths, half naked babes and tiffany shepis, and what more could u ask for??? Err.... Night of the demon???:D
The creature in the film is very well realised, and a far cry from the "man in a monkey suit" type of film. Mind you,i like em as well.:D

That sounds interesting, mark meakin. I never seem to watch much telly nowadays, I'm too busy with DVDs instead so I'll probably wait for the DVD.

Come on then Scotland (TALL DUDE to everyone else) give us a list of your favourite and least favourite Bigfoot films. I know you like your Yetis.

mark meakin 19th November 2008 12:36 PM

This Italian effort I saw on precert was quite funny:-

Ok dude, off the top of me head we have...

Night of the demon...dick rippin fun.
Abominable....great recent entry in the genre.
Snowbeast...tacky but fun tv movie.Made an impression on me as a kid.
Shriek of the mutilated....so bad its good.
sasquatch hunters...average,even though it has lance henriken in the cast.
Clawed....another average recent release.
Legend of bigfoot...ok.
capture of bigfoot....average.A bit slow going for me.
Search for the beast...ha-ha-ha! Contains one of the funniest bigfoot rape scenes ever(possibly the only one.) Awful, but fun.
Suburban sasquatch....has to be seen to be believed! If u thought search was bad cloud, wait till you see this beaut. Another from the infamous decrepit crypt 50 movie pack.:ack:
The abominable snowman...one of hammers lesser efforts.Ok,but its been years since i last watched this.
Legend of boggy creek...good. a little slow.
Boggy creek 2...painfully slow.
Creature from black lake...good,although the r2 dvd release is awful.
Rana...bill rebane has a go at the bigfoot legend...not bad, unitentionally funny in places.
Snow creature...aint seen this one.
Terror in the swamp...had a vhs of this back in the early 90's.Mediocre at best.
Sasquatch...aint seen this one.
Werewolf and the yeti...enjoyable nonsense from paul naschy.
Harry and the hendersons...:ack:

Probably more i've forgotten about.;)

cloud 19th November 2008 03:17 PM

I've been after Yeti: Giant Of The 20th Century for ages. Fancy selling me your Pre-Cert?

Great stuff TD! I think we agree on nearly everything there but would you class Rana: The Legend Of Shadow Lake as a Bigfoot entry? I always thought it was a giant frog :p. I thought the last 20 minutes of it were good but the first hour was agonisingly slow.

Oh another Bigfoot shagfest is an obscure film called GEEK. I have a bit of it on my GODMONSTER OF INDIAN FLATS disc but to get it in its entirety you have to buy the Something Weird DVD-R. Someone Weird recommended that one a while back.

I remember that as well mate

Scared the piss out of me!!!

Watched about 5 minutes of that Yeti film on Sci-Fi.They showed the beast in those first few minutes which was silly and it was a man in a suit with a lousy prosthetic face job.The CGI during a plane crash was abysmal too.

mark meakin 23rd November 2008 01:50 PM

The atmospheric Boggy Creek scared me as youngster when it menaces the family in the isolated house. It's available stateside on several dvd versions of varying quality.

bedorca 24th November 2008 08:22 PM

Which is the best Mark?

I may invest...........

Great cover and Henstooth!! What a fabulous name!

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 24th November 2008 08:48 PM

18 quid on Amazon mate......;)

bedorca 24th November 2008 08:50 PM

Good quality?

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 24th November 2008 08:52 PM

Not bad,I don't think you'll ever get it looking HiDef mate,it would detract from the nostalgic enjoyment of it....you remember when it was screened on BBC2 on many a cold winter night?;)

bedorca 24th November 2008 08:53 PM

I do, and being unable to sleep for most of them!

You are right about the nostalgia thing. Hi-Def would take the edge off ;)

Henstooth have the best looking transfer going on the numerous reviews.Think I'll get this film which was surprisingly given a 'G' upon its US release.Bit scary for the youngsters IMHO & as I said before the scene where the family is menaced was genuinely scary when I saw it years ago.

vipco 25th November 2008 04:39 PM

Boogey Creek has been shown on Zone Horror , as has Snow Beast. ( Snow Beast's the one about the ski resort.?) and one with Lance H in it, though under a different title than Sasquach hunters.

vincenzo 25th November 2008 04:48 PM

Zone Horror also showed the fully uncut Night Of The Demon.

vipco 25th November 2008 11:41 PM

Thats right Vince, I forgot about that one even though I watched it on Zone outta curiousity to see how mutch it would be cut by.

Still sends a wee shiver up the spine mate, and as you say that 'family' scene is the best....a film best viewed in the dark......:woot:

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 26th November 2008 05:27 PM

Now how about NIGHT OF THE DEMON Almar?:D:p

vipco 26th November 2008 05:42 PM

I think this would be one release that EVERYBODY would be upgrading their old copies to.

I've the VIPCO and BijouFlix unrated version which serve me well , but bring this out on Shameless with 2 jacket versions and i'll by 2 on release day. I PROMISE.
Imagine having 2 NOTD in Shameless quality with different artwork jackets.

There isn't enough Bigfoot porn. Though Beauties and the Beast starring Uschi Digard has plenty of softcore. Here's the scary Mr.Foot from that cheese fest.

I was watching CURSE OF BIGFOOT last night and deary me, it was terrible! On the DVD case it says they were making another film but late on changed their minds and decided to cash in on the Bigfoot craze of the time (mid-70s), it shows! The monster has to be seen to be believed but as a matter of fact he's the best thing about the movie and being a fan of bad movie monsters this one was real eye candy for me. The problem with this film is that it's not good bad but boring bad. There are scenes when it shows people wandering through the woods for 10 minutes and there's nothing happening, no forboding atmosphere, no jumps, no quick shots of the Yeti, no nothing. Now to me that ain't what I think makes a good movie, or rather an entertaining one. The last 5 minutes are classic stuff, if only the rest of the film had tried staying consistent with that.

Here's the monster ;):

http://www.monsterlandtoys.com/video...%20Bigfoot.gif

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA240_.jpg

Oh and in case you're wondering, I watched it on a cheapo Alpha DVD double bill with the equally lame CATHY'S CURSE. Both feature almost unwatchable prints but hey at least we're seeing a film as obscure as Curse being released, so beggars can't be choosers.

Someone Weird 4th January 2009 01:31 PM

I have Curse of Bigfoot on retroflicks-dvd(r). It's an ok disc for what it is, and the film itself is ok for a laugh, but like you say, can be a bit of a slog. It has a certain charm though. It originally started out as 'Teenagers Battle The Thing' I believe, before mutating into 'Curse'....I think there's part(s) of a 3rd film lumped into the story too, but my memory is vague on this....

cloud 4th January 2009 05:39 PM

Alright SW, long time no see! How you doing?

I'm guessing the Alpha disc is a direct port of the Retromedia one. What was the PQ like on it? There were parts of this print where you had to really strain your eyes to see what was going on.
