The Mr Vampire and Spooky Encounters franchises have a special place in my heart. I love that 80s golden age :)

This looks pretty good...been wondering about this one for some time and stumbled upon the trailer today. :)

Watched Mad Mad Ghost, which has Lam Ching-Ying and some ghosts but is basically more of a comedy and pits our beloved Taoist (and his disciples) against 2 British treasure hunter baddies!

I actually thought this one was rather charming...not scary or creepy though. :)

Just finished watching The Dead and the Deadly.
More of chopsocky flick with some action/revenge/comedic/supernatural shenanigans.
A ghost enlists his friend to take revenge basically but it's more complicated than that. ;)
Lam Ching-Ying is great as an elderly taoist btw.

Overall I wouldn't recommend this if you're looking for a "real" HK horror but it's still a fun watch.

Just stuck an order in for seeding of a ghost off amazon, all this talk of hk horror made me do it!

Spooky Encounters 2 - any other dvd besides the French one?

bdc 20th April 2012 08:24 PM

Finished watching Untold Story 2 (1997) and though not a real horror film it's a very dark Cat III thriller.
Only a sequel by name really but it does feature Anthony Wong,a restaurant and cannibalism! ;)
This reminded me a lot of Intruder (1998) btw.
A very good Cat III offering imho that deserves the same status as a film like Red To Kill in my book.

Agreed and i recall enjoying the film too when Channel 4 screened it years ago. The part where the ghostly husband strides past his still-living wife and gives her a swift slap is class! "Bitch!"

It's high time British audiences benefitted from a U.K. DVD release as all we've had to put up with was the old Eastern Heroes VHS edition from the '90s.

The original 'Spooky Encounters' effort is the better film imo and i don't think it'll be too long before Cine Asia reissue this title on DVD.

The sequel has it's moments but it's the frenetic final reel that sticks in my mind the most.:)

bdc 19th May 2012 12:24 PM

Another Shaw horror I intend to pick up. ;)

Off to watch Bio-Zombie,been ages since i last watched this one!

Satan Returns (1996)

Turns out out this is a Cat IIB and not a Cat III flick after all (even if the MIA dvd cover says otherwise).

Solid and creepy HK demonic thriller with a certain visual flair which comes recommended. :thumb:

The dvd is letterboxed and probably uses the old laserdisc master but considering how rare this is,I was happy with it.

I'll pick this one up as its dirt cheap on amazon so I won't mind the inevitably diabolical transfer from MIA :D Thanks for the recommendation!

Some comedy, some ghostly shenanigans and a typical Shaw subplot (which provides the opportunity to throw in some fights).

Obviously inspired by the success of Spooky Encounters as it is a very similar film in feel.

Just ordered this one.

Looks like fun. ;)

Forgive me - I know what a Cat III film is, but what is a Cat IIB?

bdc 22nd June 2012 07:25 PM

IIB is a slightly lower rating than III. ;)

OK - presumably equivalent to a UK '15' rating then?

bdc 22nd June 2012 07:34 PM

It's somewhat similar to the "modern" UK 15 rating. ;)
But it's only an advisory rating like all HK ratings (except Cat III).

Of course - I have seen some Cat III films that would struggle to get an 18R in the UK!

Shy Spirit (1991)

Best described as a romantic ghost story, this one is rather charming and has a decent amount of solid action as well.

Where's Officer Tuba? (1986)

Think a sort of remake of The Dead and The Deadly (1983) and you're halfway there.

The ghost story part is badly underdeveloped here though but the film makes up for it's lack of supernatural thrills with some excellent action sequences.

It's still ok (thanks to the action and the fun cop buddy interaction) but only of minor interest if you're looking for a HK horror. ;)

Wizard's Curse (1992)

Now this is more like it... :thumb:

"A pair of brain-eating evil spirits are vanquished whilst having athletic sex, but brought back by a greedy wizard, whose brain they promptly eat. A taoist priest takes pains to keep lustful Julian away from his luscious doctor daughter. But as the brain eaters pursue father and daughter, it's a young cop who is drawn to Ellen. And, to achieve maximum good power, they must first have sex......."

This one has a script by Wong Jing of course! :loco:

I have a feeling there's a version with more nudity (than my version featured) somewhere in a vault or something but still...
Recommended! :)

The Beauty's Evil Roses (1992)

"This is one strange film!"
"All kinds of strange weirdness and much much more are waiting for your enjoyment or confusion in this film. You be the judge!"
I agree.

I wouldn't recommend this to the casual viewer but for "more experienced" viewers this HK Cat III black magic tale could prove interesting. ;)

The version I watched was missing lots of footage (print damage or censorship) though.

Watched several HK horrors lately but haven't found time to review them yet...maybe tonight?

Just ordered this one (decribed as a wuxia/horror/zombie (non-hopping variety)/mystery film by someone),curious what it will be like... ;)

Pituitary Hunter aka Brain Theft (1982/1990?)

Closest thing to a HK giallo I've come across since Corpse Mania.
I wouldn't really compare them though since PH obviously had a much smaller budget and definitely eyes more trashy (but fun). ;)

Someone's stealing the brains from the corpses in the hospital morgue and soon after even the brains of the living are being hunted...

Sleaze, weirdness and some solid stalk sequences make this one oddly compelling but be warned that the ending is a real (intentional) tearjerker. :)

Devil Eye (2002)

The worst I've seen from Cash Chin Man-Kei...
No-budget shot on DV quickie made in Thailand.
There's definitely a "post-Ring" influence but it looks like the story was made up as they went along...best to avoid imho.
I would love to know the story behind the making of this one though. ;)

bdc 26th August 2012 09:50 PM

Vampire Controller (2001)

Charming but don't expect too much horror... ;)
One of the last "traditional" Chinese horror films ever made (and one of the few to concern a corpse drive!).

There's some early cgi (3 instances I think) but it's only used for some small effects and it's not really annoying, the rest of the film is totally old school.

Would fit nicely next to Ghost Legend or Spiritual Trinity even if they are better films with more horror elements.
They all have a similar feel to them.

Out of the Dark 1995

Don't be fooled by the trailer because this one is 80% typical Stephen Chow mo lei tau comedy and 20% more or less serious horror.
Luckily I knew this before going in... ;)
Not bad if you like the typical Chow humor.

bdc 9th September 2012 06:29 PM

Shaolin vs. Evil Dead (2004)

Ok mostly old school style HK horror with a very abrupt ending. ;)
The film starts with a corpse drive btw.
The cgi is incorporated surprisingly well most of the time.

Shaolin vs. Evil Dead - Trailer - YouTube

Shaolin vs. Evil Dead 2: Ultimate Power (2005-6?)

Bizarre sequel/prequel which seems to be happening in a parallel universe?
This is more of a very mediocre wuxia style film with some fantasy/horror elements.
It also completely ditches the comedy from "part 1".
Mostly unconnected to the first film imho (except from some characters popping up in both films).

Incidentally both films look like an old tv series on the dvd's although they seem to have been shot on 35 mm and have "below average" pic quality...
