SEEN ANY BRITISH GEMS RECENTLY? 2 Attachment(s) Anyone seen any lost or forgotten British gems lately? For instance,I watched THE NIGHT DIGGER the other night. With a cast that includes Nicolas Clay and Patricia Neal,a script by Road Dahl and score by Bernard Herrmann anyone who likes movies of the PEEPING TOM or TWISTED NERVE ilk will love this. Warner have,as usual did a nice transfer job for a film this age. Highly recommended. Now what else you all saw?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fdxb3j0tvV0 |
Best one I've seen recently was Satan's Slave, very cool! Thinking of getting Twisted Nerve, any good? |
I've still to watch my Katarina's disc of Satan's Slave. TWISTED NERVE is excellent! So much so Tarantino nicked it's Bernard Herrmann whistle for KILL BILL. Twisted Nerve (1968) Trailer - YouTube |

I only watched this again a few week back.. |
2 Attachment(s) Deadly Strangers with Simon Ward and Hayley Mills and directed by the great Sidney Hayers. A cracking Brit psychological thriller that is waaaaay overdue for a legit DVD release. |
The U.K release of twisted nerve looks fantastic, its well worth picking up imo. Does Bunny lake is missing count? I'm fairly certain its an american production, but its shot in the uk. Brilliant bit of filmmaking. |

And don't forget "Seance on a Wet Afternoon". Maybe it's not a 'forgotten' film, but it's a classic nevertheless |
One of the best British cult films ever, has to be the brilliantly weird biker/horror flick PSYCHOMANIA with Beryl Reid as a Satanic-worshipping granny trying to stop her biker-mad son from being a bad boy. The bike chase around the town, where the bike gang terrorise the locals, is hilarious, as is the scene where the head biker (is his name Tom, as I can't recall?) is reborn, and leaps out of the grave, on his motorbike! Fantastic film, and highly underrated! A classic of British cinema! :woot: |
Liked the low budget thing i watched a while back, Lie Still/The Haunting of No 24, decent enough chiller etc. Also found a vanilla Paperhouse in the-shop-with-the-dog recently, and while it wasn't that great, i always thought it had some decent imagery in it. Straight Through Til Morning i'd also stick in, as it has a fair amount of the old tension in it, even if Rita T's wig lets it down;);) Haven't seen Deadly Strangers in YEARS, maybe this is what Arrow should be putting out instead of things that are already available cough cough |

Brilliant film. Shame the Blu never appeared because Severin (I think?) couldn't find good enough materials. Let's hope a decent negative turns up one day and we'll all get the release this film richly deserves. In a similar vein, the UK needs a good release of Horror Express too. |
The soundtrack for Psychomania is great too.I like the scene in the movie where Nicky Henson is buried by the gang, sitting astride his motorbike. :D http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mik1c8yPLTc |
Enough already with the Psychomania love in ;), if we're talking Brit "gems" it has to be Tower Of Evil A-hem. |

Every time Arrow announce yet another re-release it gets weary considering films like Deadly Strangers, The Ghoul etc sit in limbo. |

I always watch this on a double bill with the excellent HORROR HOSPITAL. |

I watched The Oblong Box the other night. A Poe adaptation in name only, this is a great tale of body snatchers, a voodoo curse, and the living dead. Starring both the iconic Vincent Price and Christopher Lee (although, sadly they only share one brief scene on screen together), though the story is a bit silly at times (plus, has to be in the running for 'most unrealistic knife deaths in a film ever'), this is highly recommended. |

love tower of evil, horror hospital... Just watched something a little more contemporary. TONY: LONDON SERIAL KILLER. Surprisingly good with a decent central performance, pretty bleak and unrelenting. |
Here's two more: City of the Dead (1960) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8e_k7IVWQA Eye of the Devil (1966) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UHd5zNY-hBs |
I don't know Eye of the Devil. What release is it Bdc? Its probably from Warner Archives now i come to think . |

It's the "most complete" version to re-surface (TCM /Warner Archive version) http://c.dv1.us/p1/958/132958-d1.jpg |

How about Fright (1971)? An effective little Brit chiller with Susan George, Ian Bannen, Dennis Waterman, George Cole and Honor Blackman. |
Nice one. Talking about British thrillers...I also liked Eyewitness (1970)... ;) Eyewitness AKA Sudden Terror (1970) part 1 - YouTube And...Assault (1970) Btw this is out on an official UK dvd (Network I think) so forget the bootlegger's ad campaign in the vid. It was the only decent quality one I could get to play... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM6ajIUdbjA |
2 Attachment(s) I watched a couple of British gems last night. Attack the Block 2011 and 1961's The Hellfire Club. Only fifty years between them. |
I take it you liked Attack the Block then, Dem? |

1 Attachment(s) how about some comedy as well? The obvious ones are holy grail and life of brian, but recently I discovered The rise and rise of michael rimmer after picking up the dvd in a local charity shop. Attachment 59505 Peter cook is excellent and the film is still politically relevant today Very funny and also more than a little bit chilling at the same time. Also bed sitting room (discussed quite a lot in the blu-ray threads) is well worth a look as well. |
Some great choices there ASSAULT is another cracker as is Susan George's FRIGHT and EYEWITNESS. Fright has it's own thread here btw..... http://www.cult-labs.com/forums/brit...collinson.html |
Any fans of Womaneater (1958)? " And how about The Day of the Triffids (1962)? Will there ever be a nice dvd? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6jZPeSRf_U |

and Hopefully some day!! |
DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS TALES FROM THE CRYPT - one of my all time fave anthology films HOT FUZZ - one if not the most funniest Brit film THE SQUEEZE - come on somebody, release this classic 70's thriller in the UK! already got the Warner Archives dvdr but a sp.ed. dvd...??! |
I've got to agree with you on Tales from the Crypt, it's one of my faves too.I'm not such a fan of Dr Terrors House of Horrors though, I much prefer Amicus' From Beyond the Grave, The Vault of Horror and The House That Dripped Blood.Another Brit horror gem well worth seeking out for anyone who hasn't seen it is Death Line (aka Raw Meat). :) |
Kill List..this film really got to me. First I hated it but kept watching. Then I loved it. I watched twice and it was amazing! I had alittle trouble with the thick British accent...yeah I'm a yank..;) |
1 Attachment(s) Quite liked this newer one. :) |
The Disappeared {2008} Very creepy mood enhancing film. http://i374.photobucket.com/albums/o...2008/disap.jpg |
1 Attachment(s) Try this one out-very gritty and realistic. I'm just too young to remember Neilson's rampage, but I recall the panic the country was in during Sutcliffe's reign of terror, and I imagine Post Office employee's up and down the country would have been the same in the seventies.... |
1 Attachment(s) Actually a UK/US co-production...does that count? ;) |
Yeah,why not B!;) |
