Grindhouse Releasing

Grindhouse Releasing has announced CORRUPTION and AN AMERICAN HIPPIE IN ISRAEL as the first in a series of new Blu-ray, DVD and theatrical releases. Both movies will arrive on home video on September 10.

Founded by the late Sage Stallone (1976-2012) and Bob Murawski, Grindhouse Releasing has long been considered the Criterion of cult movie labels. In a span of seventeen years, the company has produced lavish restorations of such notorious titles as CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, Lucio Fulci's THE BEYOND, I DRINK YOUR BLOOD, PIECES, and many more to worldwide acclaim from fans and critics.

"Sage and Bob were pioneers in catering to the niche audience, and blazed a trail for all to follow," says Jay Douglas of CAV Distribution. "The anticipation for Grindhouse's return to the home video marketplace is incredible."

The release of AN AMERICAN HIPPIE IN ISRAEL and CORRUPTION marks the company's return to the video market after a hiatus of two years during which Academy Award-winning film editor Murawski was busy working on Sam Raimi's OZ THE GREAT AND POWERFUL. It is also the company's first release since the passing of company founder Sage Stallone.

"After two years in the yellow brick prison of OZ, I am back full-time at Grindhouse Releasing, proudly continuing the important work that Sage and I began back in 1996," says Murawski. "We have an incredible slate of mind-blowing films that will be coming your way soon on Blu-ray and DVD. And on the big screen in a theater near you."

Grindhouse Releasing has brought its films to theaters all over North America. In recent years, the company coordinated nationwide theatrical releases of such celebrated horror classics as Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD and William Lustig's MANIAC (both remade in 2013). Grindhouse scored a hit on the midnight movie circuit in 2010 with its restoration of Duke Mitchell's long-lost gangster epic GONE WITH THE POPE, and now aims to do the same with the psychedelic nightmare AN AMERICAN HIPPIE IN ISRAEL.

"AN AMERICAN HIPPIE IN ISRAEL is already drawing huge midnight movie crowds in Tel Aviv, where it's become another ROCKY HORROR," says company theatrical director David Szulkin. "We plan to do a full theatrical run of the film in the U.S. to promote the film's release on Blu-ray and DVD."

The rarely seen, shocking British feature CORRUPTION, starring Peter Cushing as a mad surgeon, will hit Blu-ray and DVD on September 10. The Grindhouse Releasing special edition of CORRUPTION coincides with the legendary Hammer Films star's 100th birthday, and will be preceded by a series of theatrical playdates.

Four additional titles will follow in late 2013 and late 2014: Sergio Sollima's THE BIG GUNDOWN, THE SWIMMER, starring Burt Lancaster, Duke Mitchell's GONE WITH THE POPE and S.F. Brownrigg's SCUM OF THE EARTH (a.k.a. POOR WHITE TRASH PART 2). According to Murawski, the company's entire back catalog will also appear in new Blu-ray editions soon thereafter.

Do you know if Corruption will be Region A locked? And / or will it be getting a UK release?

No I don't know that.

Our upcoming Blu-ray re-release of PIECES is being mastered from 4K scans of the original camera negative. The work was done by Deluxe Lab in Madrid. Nothing but the best for a classic like PIECES. In addition, our upcoming release of THE SWIMMER was also scanned at 4K. Both coming to Blu-Ray soon.

I've already got the lovely looking Grindhouse special edition DVD release of Pieces.Even though the film is a lot of fun, I very much doubt whether I would upgrade to Blu-ray for it.The Beyond, Cannibal Ferox and Cannibal Holocaust are a different matter though. :)

Grindhouse have announced that they have sold through all remaining stock of An American Hippie in Israel. This means that all retailers will not be getting any more stock from the distributor as there isn't any!

Anyone still yet to pick this up would be wise to buy a copy in the near future.

Paul@TheOverlook 19th November 2013 07:28 AM

I really liked it - really didn't know what to spect going in.

Just to clarify, are you talking about the three-disc version specifically or the film on general? It was my understanding that there was a limited quantity of the three discer and that would be superseded by a regular edition.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 19th November 2013 07:56 AM

Just the current three discer release (as it was limited to 2000 copies).

I haven't heard when/if a re-release will follow... maybe they aren't expecting massive sales on this one and will not press more (as with all companies minimum pressing quantities would have to be in largish batches). I'm only speculating though, but a title like 'Hippie' has an extremely niche market.

Cheers for the heads up. Been meaning to buy this but there was always something else that took priority. Ordered!

Zann 19th November 2013 05:53 PM

Nothing I've heard, read or know about the film holds any appeal for me whatsoever....but even then because of the label and the rarity I nearly bought it....it took all the self-control I could muster not to. Sad, sad obsessive.

Gold6082 19th November 2013 06:20 PM

Any news on the release date of the Pieces Blu Ray announced months ago?

Jinx_Barkman 9th January 2015 12:18 AM

Okay, The Beyond I can slightly understand with Arrow's release and all (hoping Grindhouse's version looks a little better) but how is this place not talking about Massacre Mafia Style and Gone With The Pope finally getting released? On blu-ray no less!

http://images3.static-bluray.com/mov...0774_large.jpg

Grindhouse Releasing has detailed the Blu-ray release of Duke Mitchell's Massacre Mafia Style (1978), which stars Mitchell, Vic Caesar, Lorenzo Dodo and Fred Otash. The film makes its Blu-ray debut on February 10, 2015.

Official Synopsis: Italian-American actor and nightclub singer Duke Mitchell wrote, produced, directed and starred in this homemade answer to The Godfather, self-financed with earnings from his career as the self-proclaimed "Mr. Palm Springs." Previously known for his Martin and Lewis act with Sammy Petrillo as seen in Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla, Duke plays the ruthless son of a Mafia kingpin who blasts his way through Hollywood on a bloody crime spree. Promising "more guts, more action, more dynamite" than the Mario Puzo gangster classic, Massacre Mafia Style delivers an onslaught of low-budget mayhem unlike anything you've ever seen.

The Blu-ray release of Massacre Mafia Style features a new high definition digital restoration of the film's original director's cut and mono soundtrack, utilizing the original film elements. Special features include:
Interviews with Jeffrey Mitchell, Frankie Ray, George Jacobs, Jim LoBianco, and exploitation legend Matt Cimber
Almost one full hour of never-before-seen Duke Mitchell home movies
Lost audio recording – Duke Mitchell Live in Concert, June 9, 1960
Bonus TV special – An Impressionistic Tribute to Jimmy Durante
Extensive still galleries, radio spots, and theatrical trailer
Glossy booklet with rare photos and liner notes by author David Szulkin
Spectacular new cover painting by renowned Los Angeles cult artist Dave Lebow
Beautiful embossed slip cover
And other surprises!

Independent U.S. distributors Grindhouse Releasing have released a brand new trailer confirming that director Duke Mitchell's cult crime film Gone with the Pope will be released on Blu-ray in March. Technical specs and supplemental features to be included with this upcoming release are yet to be revealed.

Duke Mitchell was an Italian Rudy Ray Moore, a popular nightclub performer, singer, actor, and self-proclaimed "Mr. Palm Springs" whose long-running Martin & Lewis-style comedy act with partner Sammy Petrillo was featured in BELA LUGOSI MEETS A BROOKLYN GORILLA. Mitchell went on to use his talents and show business connections to produce two of the most entertaining films of the Seventies, which he wrote, directed, produced, scored and starred in.

GONE WITH THE POPE stars Duke Mitchell as Paul, a gangster with an unholy scheme: to kidnap the pope and charge "a dollar from every Catholic in the world" as the ransom. Shot in 1975 as KISS THE RING, GONE WITH THE POPE was unfinished at the time of Duke Mitchell's death in 1981.

Sage Stallone and Bob Murawski of Grindhouse Releasing rediscovered GONE WITH THE POPE in 1995 and vowed to save it from obscurity. Academy Award-winning film editor Murawski (THE HURT LOCKER, SPIDER-MAN 1,2 & 3) spent 15 years completing GONE WITH THE POPE from the surviving film elements.

Boo Radley 9th January 2015 09:49 AM

I will get these but they will be a totally blind buy for me. I think the lack of enthusiasm is due to the relative obscurity of these titles. There are probably only a couple of Labbers that have ever seen MMS and no one has seen GWTP.
But Hey, if Grindhouse release it, I'll buy it!

Demdike@Cult Labs 9th January 2015 11:06 AM

I've never heard of either film, nor Duke Mitchell actually.

Rik 9th January 2015 11:14 AM

Me neither

Look any more familiar now?;)

I've only heard of them through reputation, and the fact that Grindhouse have been promising to release them and have been promoting them both on their site for the last gazillion years. ;)

"We are sorry to report that MASSACRE MAFIA STYLE and THE BEYOND have been delayed once again. The Criterion-style cases that we use are still not in stock. This three month shortage has been a nightmare for us since we also use these cases for CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST and CORRUPTION, which are also on back-order at this point. I have been told that the shipment of cases has finally arrived in the US and is on its way to our manufacturer in San Francisco via truck. They are scheduled to arrive some time next week, barring weather delays. Once the cases arrive, MASSACRE MAFIA STYLE will be assembled first and ready to ship for the new release date of March 10. THE BEYOND has more complex packaging and needs to be hand assembled. There are also considerably more pre-orders. Therefore, to be safe, our distributor has given THE BEYOND the release date of March 24. We are hoping it will be ready sooner, and it will ship as soon as it is. We'll keep you posted. Thanks for your continued patience."

Rik 23rd February 2015 08:58 AM

I'm glad that The Beyond is delayed, because I'm skint this month, so really can't afford my pre-order

I am just a bit surprised as they were already talking about some 4K master they planned to use for the Blu-ray.

Anyhow, I'm still pretty happy with my Arrow DVD of Pieces.
