I've never seen Bad Day at Black Rock so that's a certainty for me as i've always wanted to watch it.

When it's in a 2 for £15 offer of course.

I haven't seen Von Ryan's Express, but I've just had a quick look and it seems the critics were really liked it when it was released, as did audiences, so it'll be good to have that in my collection.

It's also good to see 1984, a film I've seen several times and think is a great adaptation of Orwell's novel being released in HD and part of this collection.

Rob4 22nd June 2018 10:20 AM

Did the Director's preferred score ever get restored to 1984 or is it still the Eurythmics score?

I'll still buy anyway as I like the movie but it would be nice if the Director's version was available.

Demdike@Cult Labs 22nd June 2018 10:50 AM

It’s on the US blu-ray (along with the Eurythimcs score), but the MGM blu’s over here just have the Eurythmics score on the English track.

Demdike@Cult Labs 22nd June 2018 11:51 AM

Gorgeous artwork to Von Ryan's Express.

I confess to not having seen 1984. Is it really good?

Are Alexa and Echo basically the same thing?

I’ll go one better, I’ve never heard of Von Ryan’s Express

But, I have seen 1984 after reading the book at school

Justin101 22nd June 2018 01:30 PM

Oh yeah 1984!
Great miserable film, right up my alley :D

If anyone hasn't read the book, read it! You'd be surprised how much George Orwell had it on the nose, a little later than 1984 but it's all true

Should’ve mentioned that the US disc was from Twilight Time and it’s sold out now.

Another two worthy additions.

Anyone know when Grand Prix re-hits the shelves?

Apparently the Betamax discs were all corrupt and had to be withdrawn....

Has anyone seen Yakuza and is it recommended?

Thoroughly.

Nosferatu@Cult Labs 4th July 2018 07:43 PM

It didn't grab me at first, but I was interested by the way was heading and was engrossed by the end, so yes, it's worth picking up.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 4th July 2018 10:02 PM

Sir Ridley picked up an idea or two for Black Rain here,methinks......

Interesting. Black Rain is third only to Gladiator and Blade Runner as far as i'm concerned in the Ridley Scott directorial efforts.

in my ranking of Ridley Scott directorial efforts Black Rain doesn't even get ahead of the Hovis advert ;)

Nostalgic 5th July 2018 07:51 PM

Quick question, how many Bogart titles in the Premium Collection?

Big Sleep
Maltese Falcon
Treasure of the Sierra Madre
Dark Passage

Any I'm missing on this list?

Thanks!

WowBobWow 5th July 2018 08:02 PM

Casablanca

Thank you! They are currently 2 for £15 so wanted to grab 4, even though i dont have the money, want to grab them while on offer!

Plus Gettysburg & lost Horizon! Seriously, I can live on soup until the 28th!

WowBobWow 6th July 2018 07:03 AM

Casablanca is probably the best release from this collection, taken from a 4K scan and comes with a decent book(let).

Like you, I’ve filled my boots at this price, I had £10 on my pure card which helped. I only need four more now, the two Hitchcock’s, Dark Passage and The Time Machine.

I fancied the two with Lauren Bacall, they look 'noirish' are they any good?

The Big Sleep is one of the greatest classic film noirs. I haven't seen Dark Passage for a long time (and intend to buy the release from this collection) but remember it being a solid film, but not the best of the Bogart-Bacall films, even though it possibly features Bacall's best performance.

If you like film noir, you'll probably want to add these to your collection.

WowBobWow 6th July 2018 09:37 AM

I haven't seen Dark Passage, but The Big Sleep is brilliant. The Premium Collection edition also has the 1945 pre-release version, I haven't got around to watching that yet.

Justin clearly doesn't watch Film Noir or he wouldn't be asking about The Big Sleep. :tongue1:

Maybe it's one which has somehow not been on his buying radar before now.

Hopefully he'll watch and love the likes of that film and the wonderful Dark Passage and decide to walk the dangerous shadowy mean streets of Noir cinema.

Demdike@Cult Labs 6th July 2018 11:29 AM

The Big Sleep and The Maltese Falcon would make for a faultless 2 for £15 Premium Collection purchase for anyone new to Noir cinema.

Demdike@Cult Labs 6th July 2018 11:31 AM

Badlands is a film i've never seen. Is that very good?

WowBobWow 6th July 2018 11:38 AM

Badlands is superb, in my opinion it's the best work Spacek, Sheen, Oates and Malick have been involved in, and by a distance. Probably the best directorial debut of all time.

nosferatu42 6th July 2018 11:43 AM

I really like Badlands too, Sheen and Spacek are great in it.

It's a masterpiece. The flawless casting, hauntingly beautiful score (used to a completely different effect in True Romance) and the way Terrence Malick uses the locations makes for a thoroughly engrossing viewing experience.

I can count the number of noir films I've seen on one hand, but I liked all of them! In fact, Double Indemnity is one of my all time favourite films :)
