I’ve only had it with VS. They must lace their parcels with steroids or something. I’ve always had deliveries from them via FedEx and it’s always been extremely fast. I’ve always passed the free postage threshold so not sure if they use a slower service for smaller orders.

I see, that makes sense, thanks.

'The Cellar' (1986) - Pre-order available from Vinegar Syndrome direct - $27.99

Release date: April 27

"The Cashen family has just relocated from the city to a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere in Texas. Upon arrival at their new home, Willy, their young son, explores the area, befriending a Native American shaman who warns him of the powerful forces and apparent curse on their land. Meanwhile, at home, Willy senses that there's something unusual about the cellar of their home; specifically that something strange might be living down there...and unfortunately for the Cashens, it's very hungry...

An unfortunately troubled production, with director Kevin Tenney (Night of the Demons, Witchtrap) called in early on to take over directing duties, THE CELLAR is a stylish monster film playing into the folk horror of the American southwest. Starring Patrick Kilpatrick (Minority Report), Academy Award nominee, Chris Miller (Puss In Boots), Suzanne Savoy (The Upside), and veteran character actor Don Collier (Tombstone), Vinegar Syndrome presents THE CELLAR newly restored in 2K and on Blu-ray for the first time, offered in both its commonly seen theatrical cut as well as its never before seen, and vastly superior, original director's cut."

VS going down the American Horror Project route:

Home Grown Horrors: Volume One

This limited edition and painstakingly crafted box set (designed by Tom Hodge of The Dude Designs) is limited to 7,000 units and is only available here at VinegarSyndrome.com!

Throughout the 1980s and 90s, independent and first time filmmakers across the United States saw new opportunities to create work in the horror genre. Often integrating the flavor and color of their inner-America locales into their work, they created films that, while inspired by mainstream trends, are about as far from Hollywood as one can get. Collected here are three diverse films, all produced in the late 1980s, providing a fascinating and entertaining glimpse into the forgotten world of Home Grown Horror.

BEYOND DREAM'S DOOR:

Lately, Ben hasn't been sleeping well. His dreams are filled with violent and terrifying visions of monsters and death. Seeking out answers, he begins to pursue the subtext and hidden meanings of his strange and terrifying nightmares, with the help of his professor and several friends. As the dreams grow increasingly lifelike, Ben fears that he's losing his grip on sanity, especially as those around him start turning up dead; horribly mutilated just like he's seen in his sleep...

A low-on-budget but extremely high on ambition apocalyptic horror film, and the first feature written and directed by jack-of-all-trades filmmaker, Jay Woelfel, the Ohio lensed BEYOND DREAM’S DOOR skillfully blends elements of surrealism, mystery, and grotesque and violent horror set-pieces, resulting in a wholly singular vision. Sadly relegated direct-to-video, BEYOND DREAM’S DOOR has earned a sizable cult following and comes to Blu-ray for the very first time, from Vinegar Syndrome, painstakingly reconstructed shot by shot from its original, unedited 16mm camera negative, and is presented in its director's cut.

WINTERBEAST:

Weird things are happening in and around the Wild Goose Lodge, a snowy inn located in rural Massachusetts. People are being found dead and mutilated, while others are vanishing without a trace. Realizing that the violence might have something to do with Native American black magic and the ancient secrets of the area's historic totem poles, a trio of cops decide to investigate the goings on, and are faced with an array of monsters, ghouls, and even a sampling of murderous locals!

A film which truly justifies the term 'unclassifiable,' and the sole feature from writer and director Christopher Thies, WINTERBEAST was shot on and off for nearly half a decade and in a mix of super 8mm and 16mm, resulting in a one of a kind piece of outsider art horror filmmaking that must be seen to be believed. Loaded with surreal dialogue, mind-blowing stop motion animation, homemade gore effects, and more than a few genuinely creepy moments, Vinegar Syndrome is delighted to bring this forgotten cult gem to Blu-ray, newly restored and reconstructed from it’s original film elements and presented in both its commonly seen released version along with a never before released workprint edit.

FATAL EXAM:

A group of college students have been given a very unusual assignment: spend the night inside of a supposedly haunted house, as part of their studies into the supernatural and occult. Although the rag tag team of collegiates would much rather party and get stoned than look for ghosts, it's not long before unexplained events begin to occur. Initially suspecting that some of their classmates might be playing a practical joke, their fears are proven very real when someone - or something - dressed in robes and carrying a scythe starts bumping them off one by one.

A truly local slice of ultra low budget supernatural-slasher made by a first time cast and crew based in St. Louis, Missouri, Jack Snyder's FATAL EXAM plays its haunted house tropes for its first half, before shifting gears into slice n' dice mayhem for its second half. Barely released in any format and never officially made available on disc, Vinegar Syndrome is happy to bring this low-fi curiosity on Blu-ray, newly restored in 2K from its 16mm original camera negative and featuring an illuminating array of extras.

Fatal Exam: The Synder Cut.

Sorry, I had to.

The set looks fun and will hopefully be more cheesy than the Arrow American Horror Projects which, The Child excepted, always turn out to be arthouse misery-fests. VS do put a good box set together, the Forgotten Gialli sets are well curated. But as with everything VS, price is an issue.

"...But oh no, that's not all...not by a long shot because...there's still two secret titles to hold out excitement for. Said Secret Titles will be revealed the moment the sale goes live. And as much as we know you're dying to learn what they are, we think they're worth the wait, especially as one of them includes some of the best prosthetic and gore work of its ilk, while the other is an eye popping, 80s cable classic.

In the midst of the excitement, don't forget that two more VSAs will be making their debuts; both psychotic 'action' films, one in the loosest sense of the word, and perhaps the most demented film we're releasing this year.

Oh, and we've also got four more Catalog Slipcovers in the works.

Venturing outside of the VS multiverse, six (!) of our Partner Labels also have fresh titles that will be revealed and up for pre-order TOMORROW (May 1) at 12:01PM, EST. It's a very diverse selection covering everything from grimy 80s action to 60s art films to contemporary sci-fi. As always, something for everyone."

Circle Collective released through Vinegar Syndrome

'Donny's Bar Mitzvah' (2021) - Pre-order available from Vinegar Syndrome direct

Shipping before Halfway to Black Friday sale (May 28th-31st)

"This special limited edition embossed slipcover (designed by Sister Hyde) is limited to 1,200 units and is only available here at VinegarSyndrome.com!

Circle Collective formed in June 2019 in order to provide a new avenue for and community around creative distribution as an artist-forward, feature film marketing and distribution consulting agency. In partnership with OCN, Circle Collective will begin to release contemporary indie cinema across a variety of genres and origins onto physical media, maintaining the same artist-forward perspective as in their theatrical campaigns. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

Sex, drugs, and a dysfunctional family create the perfect storm for Donny Drucker’s Bar Mitzvah. We are catapulted back in time to the year 1998 as we follow a colorful array of characters from the perspective of a hired videographer. Donny tries to enjoy the evening while juggling his crazy mother, his teenage angst, and his new girlfriend Handjob Hannah. Meanwhile Gearld, the MC of the party, is on a mission to stop the notorious party pooper Val Dho who is attempting to ruin the party. All that, plus: scandalous affairs, love triangles, spin the bottle, and a man with ranch dressing for hands. But as per tradition, all must be resolved before the big song at the end of the night.

Framed as a found footage home movie and shot entirely in 4x3 to look just like your home movies from the 90s, Donny's Bar Mitzvah is a wild and raunchy coming of age comedy that mixes the familiar with the absurd, including cameos from Danny Trejo and Waldo himself. Not for the faint of heart or easily offended, see the film that The New York Times calls "horny" and has been met with confusion and derision from your local rabbi."

Fun City Editions released through Vinegar Syndrome

'Walking The Edge' (1983) - Pre-order available from Vinegar Syndrome direct

Shipping before Halfway to Black Friday sale (May 28th-31st)

"This special limited edition embossed slipcover is limited to 2,500 units and is only available here at VinegarSyndrome.com!

Fun City Editions is a new boutique label focused on creating deluxe home video editions of maverick repertory cinema that can best be described as works that exist "outside of their time." Spanning an array of genres and countries, but with a unifying focus on forgotten and overlooked treasures, the initial wave of titles will come from the New American Cinema. Each Fun City release will present stunning new restorations produced and overseen by Vinegar Syndrome and comprehensive extras which contextualize and illuminate the film's artistic and historic value. Vinegar Syndrome’s sister company, OCN Distribution, is thrilled to be representing this diverse and unique home video line!

Cult movie icons Robert Forster (Medium Cool) and Joe Spinell (Maniac) star with Nancy Kwan (Flower Drum Song) in Norbert Meisel’s gritty action drama Walking the Edge. Jason Walk (Forster), a down on his luck cabbie and numbers runner, has a chance at redemption when he crosses paths with revenge-seeking Christine Holloway (Kwan). She’s after the gang of violent criminals, led by Brusstar (Spinell), who her murdered her husband and son. Jason unwittingly drives Christine to their lair and when she is unable to finish the job, a hellbent Brusstar and his goons hunt the pair with a vengeance.

Jason Walk’s cab prowls the seedier, grimier locales of early ‘80s Los Angeles and picks up passengers—gamblers, prostitutes and addicts—who match this environment. As such, Walking the Edge is both a sleazy urban thriller and a valuable visual record of an L.A. that has long since been scrubbed clean and redeveloped. And like Max Cherry in Jackie Brown, Jason Walk is the kind of everyman-turned hero that Forster excelled at playing throughout his career.

With Edge, director Meisel (Mafia Girls) teamed with his wife Kwan for the first time. Screenwriter Curt Allen’s subsequent credits include Forster’s cult favorite Hollywood Harry. Genre veteran Jay Chattaway (Maniac and Vigilante) provides the film with a driving and catchy score. The leads are supported by a diverse cast that includes A Martinez (Powwow Highway), Luis Contreras (Repo Man), Aarika Wells (Sharky’s Machine) and Frankie Hill (Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter).

Walking the Edge has been restored in 4K from its original camera negative and now makes it worldwide Blu-ray debut."

Vinegar syndrome are amazing, but I buy most of their titles on ebay paying scalper prices. Can anyone advise on...

1. Ordering from them direct: do they deliver quickly/ do customs tear apart the packages? Does the exchange rate make it worthwhile? Basically, is it worth doing? If so, how many discs is it worth getting at once?

2. What's the deal with their upcoming sale? Is everything 50% off?

3. Does anyone ever buy their monthly package? It seems like a fun way to collect.

Opinions welcome! I wish they'd open a UK distribution arm. Their releases are totally unique.

I fear this upcoming sale may bankrupt me. Having never bought from them before. :scared: :whip:

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 1st May 2021 06:29 PM

I'm doing the same with all these Arrow 4ks!

Trashforcash 1st May 2021 07:00 PM

Thanks all, will keep an eye out for the sale and give it a go. I loved the slip and extras / restoration of Cthulu Mansion, but as I watched it I thought, "£28.99 is a bit steep for this..."

Trashforcash 5th May 2021 07:17 PM

Has anyone got the Home grown horrors set? Cant decide if it looks amazing or unwatchable!

Same goes for The Cellar... being drawn in by the slip case like a moth to the flame...

I haven't seen any of them but given that they are boxed together I suspect they are towards the lower end of regional American filmmaking. That of course, can have its own charms but I tend to wait until the price drops before blind buying something like that or at least waiting for a few reviews.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 7th May 2021 07:43 PM

I'll let you know soon.....

Right, I'm going all in on the upcoming vinegar syndrome sale and need expert advice. Has anyone bought from the sale before? If so...

1. When is it best to order? Is it only in the window from 28th-31st?

2. Is it true they shut the site a week before and after?

3. When do they announce their new titles?

4. I see alot of their titles are already marked as reduced (bur from an outrageous price to a sane price), is this the sale or does it come down further?

Never done the sale before but just saw the Homegrown Horrors set and it blew my mind. So many questions...

1. 28th and Yes. Order immediately as the ones on low stock can sell out and won't be re-stocked until after the sale.
2. I can't remember but I do think they shut it a week before at the last sale.
3. I think it was week before last time.
4. They'll come down further. About half RRP on most things but depends on how old the title is.

Trashforcash 16th May 2021 06:49 PM

That's great, thanks. It looks like a decent sale, and they are my favourite label at the moment. I watched Winterbeast the other night- it's a genius release and I cant think of anything else like it from UK distributors.

Demdike@Cult Labs 16th May 2021 07:05 PM

I've just been through their horror section.

I don't think i'll be getting anything as they would all be blind buys, mainly of movies i'd never heard of until seeing them listed.

Several have been released in the UK already. Of the ones i'd consider are Mausoleum (Saw it a long time ago on vhs and probably cut) and Satan's Slave, but i expect Indicator to release that soon anyway plus Dracula's Great Love.

The rest are obscurities and curios. Has anyone any recommendations for Gothic chillers or fun gore fests?

Trashforcash 16th May 2021 07:14 PM

I loved Murder Mansion from them as a gothic film, but you have to pay through the nose for the Forgotten Gialli 3 set to get it. Dont Panic was a funny gory one. It has a guy in dinosaur pyjamas as the lead for the most part.

Dolly Dearest was pretty fun, but not that gory, and Fade to Black was really unique and interesting, but a bit of a downer.

You really haven't won me over with a 'guy in dinosaur pyjamas'

I have Fade to Black on dvd and agree it's pretty good. I'll see about Murder Mansion. I have it on a poor quality dvd. I'll have to see what they are asking for those Forgotten Gialli sets in the sale.

Thanks for the reply Trash. :thankingyou:

Graveyard 19th May 2021 08:32 PM

Nooooo, Jack Frost is a funny movie.

Quote:

Tommy: What the hell are you?

Jack Frost: The world's most pissed-off snow cone!

Orgy of Dead I agree it's boring,

Xtro 3: Watch the Skies - so boooring, wants to be a comedy, later wants to be a Predator wannabe.

The Candy Snatchers that is a good one.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 19th May 2021 08:41 PM

In the words of Al Martino GY....To each their own,to each their own,for me there's you....':sing:

Rob4 19th May 2021 09:23 PM

The only one I'd disagree with is Massage Parlor Murders.

Sure it's bottom of the barrel crap, but it's also tremendously sleazy bottom of the barrel crap, and that't good in my book :tongue1:

Xtro 3 I downloaded onto my phone but never really watched it yet, maybe give it a miss, the second one isn't really that great but really not that terrible though.

Rob4 20th May 2021 06:41 AM

Deathrow Gameshow has no redeeming qualities - not funny, not gory and no boobies. All pre-requisites for late eighties wacky type horror. Commits the cardinal sin of being boring too...
