| Cine-Excess V - The Politics and Aesthetics of Excess Italian acting legend Franco Nero (Django, Keoma, Die Hard II) and controversial cult director Ruggero Deodato (Cannibal Holocaust, House on the Edge of the Park) headline this year’s Cine-Excess V International Cult Film Conference and Festival, which returns the Odeon Covent Garden between the 26th and 28th May 2011. Cine-Excess V features filmmaker discussions, exclusive UK theatrical premieres and a 3 day conference with over 30 separate talks on cult controversies from around the world. The theme of this year’s Cine-Excess is ‘Subverting the Senses: The Politics and Aesthetics of Excess’, which examines the theme of the controversial cult image in its political, historical and aesthetic contexts. With the resurgence of critical interest in the 1980s ‘video nasties’, as well as a whole new generation of films being subject to state control, the cult image is now a crucial index between the censor and the censored. The event features a wide range of discussions from the topics of realist footage in Cannibal Holocaust and gender politics in 1970s sexploitation, to considerations of Franco Nero’s cult roles and the crime cinema of Enzo G. Castellari. Other topics covered in the event include the social politics of Rob Zombie’s cinema and the cult of controversy surrounding A Serbian Film. Both Franco Nero and Ruggero Deodato will be discussing their prolific careers at separate events at the festival, which are open to the public. Cine-Excess V also features a screening of Deodato’s controversial classic Cannibal Holocaust on Thursday 26th May at 8.30pm. Deodato’s controversial cult catalogue will also be discussed by Professor Martin Barker (Aberystwyth University) at Cine-Excess V. Professor Barker will be delivering a keynote address on audience responses to controversial cult material such as Deodato’s House on the Edge of the Park at a historic debate session between Ruggero Deodato and Senior BBFC Examiner Craig Lapper. This panel discussion will take place on Thursday 26th May at 6.30pm. Italian screen legend will also be addressing the Cine-Excess V audience on Saturday 28th May at 4pm, in a special career retrospective that includes an exclusive screening of Sergio Corbucci’s spaghetti western classic Django (1966). This panel discussion is also free to all Cine-Excess V delegates holding a full or day rate pass. The Worldwide Theatrical Premiere of the New Edit of Cannibal Holocaust 26 May · 20:30 - 23:00 Cine-Excess V is proud to present the Worldwide theatrical premiere of one of this year’s most hotly discussed horror classics: Cannibal Holocaust. This new edit has been exclusively prepared for Shameless Films in the UK by director Ruggero Deodato, and addresses some of the controversial issues raised in the film’s original 1979 release. Ruggero Deodato’s influential and infamous tale centres on four intrepid explorers who go missing in the Amazonian wilderness, leading to fears that they have been butchered by local ‘savages.’ However, when the noted NYU anthropologist Harold Monroe discovers the group’s final filmed diary, a far more shocking tale emerges… With its complex narrative composition and innovative use of documentary style techniques, Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust initiated a trailblazing trend of ‘found footage horror’ that continued through to The Blair Witch Project (1999) and beyond. However, the film’s stylishness was overshadowed by it savage imagery, which lead to the movie being banned and heavily censored in many European countries. In this new 2011 cut, Ruggero Deodato revisits his most controversial film to date, offering a contemporary re-reading of its subversive and shocking imagery for a new generation of fear seekers. The Worldwide premiere of the new cut of Cannibal Holocaust will be presented by director Ruggero Deodato himself, in a special on-stage discussion to be held before the screening of the film. Cannibal Holocaust Screening courtesy of Shameless Films, who will release the film on Blu-ray and DVD on 26th of September 2011. This screening is open to cinema goers over the age of 18, and tickets are priced at £12 each, (£7.50 concessions). The screening is also free to all Cine-Excess V delegates holding a full or day rate pass. Warning, Cannibal Holocaust contains scenes of violence and suffering that some viewers may find distressing. Patrons are advised not to attend this screening if they are easily offended. Art house Atrocities - Franco Nero Introduces A Quiet Place in the Country Time 27 May · 20:30 - 23:00 Location The Italian Cultural Institute, London Cine-Excess are proud to be working with our partners at the Italian Cultural Institute to programme a series of additional screenings and talks for our fifth annual event. On the evening of Friday 27th May at 8.30pm, the Italian Cultural Institute will be presenting an exclusive screening of Elio Petri’s rarely seen and disturbing avant-garde horror movie A Quiet Place in the Country. In this innovative but illusive classic, Franco Nero plays Leonardo Ferri, a tortured painter haunted by disturbing and sadomasochistic memories, which he attempts to evade by isolating himself in a remote country retreat at the behest of his seductive female companion (played superbly by Vanessa Redgrave). Here, Ferri’s unsound mind is pushed beyond its limits when it appears that this ideal rural local and his female have become the target of a female spectre murdered during the fascist era. Boasting an incredible psychedelic collage of imagery that perfectly reflects the male character’s fractured psyche, Petri’s stunning visual palette is complimented by a deliriously thumping soundtrack by Ennio Morricone, which adds to this unique cinematic experience. Part arthouse intrigue, part giallo precursor, A Quiet Place in the Country is pure Cine-Excess! We are delighted that Cine-Excess V Guest Franco Nero, who provides such a powerful performance in the movie, will be introducing this very special screening of Elio Petri’s lost classic. A Quiet Place in the Country Screening is Courtesy of Park Circus This screening is open to cinema goers over the age of 18, and tickets are priced at £7.

In this exclusive onstage interview, Franco Nero will be discussing his career, the importance of Italian cinema of the 1960s and 1970s and why the cult of Django never dies. Live Like an Italian, Die Like a Filmmaker - Ruggero Deodato 28 May · 21:00 - 23:30 Location The Italian Cultural Institute, London Cine-Excess is delighted to be working with the Italian Cultural Institute to present a very special panel discussion by one of Italy’s most prolific and confrontational directors: Ruggero Deodato. Although best known for his landmark controversial movie Cannibal Holocaust (1979), Deodato also directed a series of prolific thrillers, which often represented stark snapshots of a changing 1970s Italian cultural and political landscape. As well as discussing these films and Italian society of the 1970s, Ruggero Deodato will also be considering the extent to which wider Italian fears about terrorism and urban crime impacted on the cycle of rogue cop thrillers that proliferated during this decade. The evening concludes with a rare screening of Ruggero Deodato’s 1976 high octane thriller Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man, which features Marc Porel and Ray Lovelock as two amoral undercover officers whose quest for justice and vengeance pushes the boundaries of permissible policing to the limits. Featuring jaw dropping chase scenes (that includes an incredible extended opening motorcycle heist scene trailed around the streets of Rome), as well jaw busting scenes of gangland brutality, Deodato’s film also benefits from a taut script from crime fiction king Fernando Di Leo. Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man was selected by Ruggero Deodato as one of his own personal favourites to accompany his visit to Cine-Excess V, and we are delighted to host it as this year’s closing film. Live Like a Cop, Die Like a Man, screening courtesy of Ruggero Deodato. This screening is open to cinema goers over the age of 18, and tickets are priced at £7.
