Last night I screened the Argento cut of Dawn of the Dead to a rapturous and occasionally confused audience of Halloween freaks in the achingly hip Buffalo Bar, Cardiff.

Rapturous because it's Dawn of the Dead, it's Halloween and nothing gets a crowd in the mood for all night dancing like gut munching Zombies in an abandoned shopping centre.

Certain topics are guaranteed to rankle a viewer and put them on edge from the off, regardless of the special effects, frightening monsters or atmospheric locale. Religion, children, animal cruelty and anything to do with race or nazism were always sure fire ways for a tatty little exploiter to draw attention to itself and the same applies to art-shock flicks, those movies that needle an audience with outrageous imagery but then claim...

Doug Grifton's 1983 B-Movie is a minor classic of the Robot Snake Genre (who can forget classics like Rattletron 3000 and Bionic Boa Riders) which did good business on VHS, thanks to it's outrageous body count...

Umberto Lenzi could be the man responsible for both the creation and the destruction of the Italian cannibal cycle. If it wasn’t for his 1972 effort Deep River Savages (A.K.A Man from Deep River) it’s likely we wouldn’t have had the genre’s crown jewel, Ruggero Deodato’s Cannibal Holocaust. Here is my first film review. I will put up a spoiler tag when I think I am giving something away. So here it goes.

Yesterday was my very first viewing of Duel (which I think started as a Made-for-TV-Movie!), and it terrified me! As a passenger who has witnessed annoying tailgating and been in an accident with another vehicle, I really related at how terrifying this could be.

When it comes to classic genre films which are 'essential viewing', there isn't a definitive list, but, in 1999, Empire released a Special Collector's Edition supplement called The Greatest Horror Films Ever, which is a really good 'beginners guide' to horror. In it, there are 50 films in different categories of films, which I'll list here.
