We Are What We Are (2013) - Official Announcement We Are What We Are "Superb" ★★★★ * Matt Glasby, Total Film In cinemas from Friday 28th Feb. 2014. Also on DVD from Monday 3rd March 2014. A uniquely disturbing tale from the director of Stake Land, Jim Mickle brings a tense, heartbreaking and dramatic horror to life in this beautifully told tale of family, tradition and death. With breakout performances from Bill Sage (Boardwalk Empire) and newcomers Julia Garner (Martha Marcy May Marlene) and Ambyr Childers (The Master), We Are What We Are is an undeniably stylised piece of cinema. Key talent: Jim Mickle (Director * Stake Land, Mulberry Street) Bill Sage (Frank Parker * Boardwalk Empire, Nurse Jackie, American Psycho) Julia Garner (Rose Parker * The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Martha Marcy May Marlene, Sin City: A Dame To Kill For) Ambyr Childers (Iris Parker * 2 Guns, The Master, Ray Donovan) Michael Parks (Doc Barrow * Argo, Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2, Red State) Kelly McGillis (Marge *The Innkeepers, Top Gun, Stake Land, Witness) Synopsis: The Parkers are a seemingly wholesome family but patriarch Frank rules over them with a rigorous fervour. When tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris and Rose are forced to assume terrifying responsibilities that extend beyond those of a typical family, the local authorities begin to uncover clues to a horrible truth that the Parkers have hidden for so many years. You'll Love It Because Jim Mickle follows up the critically acclaimed horror Stake Land with a masterpiece in tension and style. We Are What We Are won us and audiences over at Film4 Frightfest 2013 with it’s gut wrenching characterisation, breakthrough performances and direction. Don’t let We Are What We Are pass you by, you will fall in love with every gruesome bite. Is it in any way connected to the Mexican 'We are What we Are'? (must be really) caught the first few seconds of that on Film4 as I recorded it, seemed pretty good, catch up with it when I have the time. If Mickle gets anywhere near the heights of Stake land this will be a must, remake or not.

Kermode gave it a good review, especially nice to hear since he tends to not look favourably on English-language remakes of horror films: |
