A prime example of British noir at its best, and definitely one of the best British films made,(this is only my opinion of course) The combination of such a terrific story by Graham Greene(Third Man) and an outstanding British cast makes it a joy to watch.Richard Attenborough as Pinkie is so mesmerizing showing a great performance at such an early stage in his career is astonishing. The story to is a great concept mixing who dunnit with revenge, betrayal and redemption of some sorts.Apart from Attenborough there's a rather roguish William Hartnell as Dallow, looking very daper as Pinkie's 2nd in command. But its Rose Brown played by Carol Marsh who gives the film its heart, her love for Pinkie and her denial of his evil side realy pulls at the heart strings, and the ending where she re-plays a record Pinkie recorded a message on for her, only for it to stick at a crucial moment would make the toughest private eye cry.Im gonna repeat my self and say this is a great film and wonderfully realised by John Boulting.
