Crime is a disease.Meet the cure.

To celebrate the release of COBRA on French Blu Ray,I thought I'd start a wee thread.

Whilst not going to win any thespian awards,COBRA is the kind of mindless action we all enjoy with a few beers,or when the latest torture porn epic is getiing just a tad tiresome.

Full of classic quotes and a sly pairing of two actors from that original,bad-ass cop movie,Dirty Harry,COBRA is OTT action at it's best.

-'I ain't no psycho.I'm a hero!You're lookin' at a ****in' hunter!I'm a hero of the new world!'

-'You're a disease-and I'm the cure.'

And another thing-that souped up 1950 Mercury Monterey!
:cool::cool::cool:

Just a little heads up Reaper, it's also just been released in Japan and Hong King. :)

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 16th February 2011 07:36 PM

Yeah,I'll stick to the French one buddy.

Don't want those Japanese-UK customs charges! :fear:

You a fan Stephen? :eyebrows:

 I paid the extra for the HK version to get the cover in English :D That should tell you how much if a fan I am. :)

wongfeihung62 16th February 2011 07:41 PM

This was shown on TV the other night. I have always have had a soft spot for this and other 80's action flicks. I believe the UK video was cut. I presume the recent BD releases are uncut?

This was absolutely massive.Especially on video.

Even spawned a computer game,on every PC as I recall!

Stephen@Cult Labs 16th February 2011 07:44 PM

Yep, the BD's are uncut. Go forth people and grab yourselves a copy.

Anth 16th February 2011 08:37 PM

Love Brian Thompson in this, I cannot possibly see how anyone cannot like this movie.

Favourite scene has to be the scene where Stallone is sorting out his kit while the Toys are Us advert is on; don't know what it is I just love the way that scene was setup.

Inspector Tanzi 17th February 2011 11:19 AM

Marion Cobretti

Inspector Tanzi 17th February 2011 11:24 AM

Check out these badboys that Warner gave to some video shops as promotional material in the 80's when the tape came out. I'd love some of these.

On another note I wonder what the fully uncut version would have looked like and does the footage even still exist? With George Pan Cosmatos gone maybe we will never know.

Stephen@Cult Labs 17th February 2011 06:30 PM

Classic Stallone.

this is definitely one film that i would love to see the pre r rated cut.
i remember reading an interview where they said they had to cut loads form the killings etc and I'm convinced there is a jump cut at the end just before Brian Thompson goes into the flames on the hook as you only see before and after shots.

dream demon 17th February 2011 08:49 PM

Along with Commando, this is one of my all-time favourite '80s action flicks, and I will definitely be picking this up very soon.

Is it just me, or do most modern 'action' flicks, actually seem less violent  . Films like Cobra, Commando, Raw Deal, and of course Death Wish just seem to have a gritty brutality (for want of a better word) compared to most modern, sanitised, glossy, over-CGI'd action flicks. And that's just the cut versions!

Oh yeah, and Brian Thompson is a legend!

Yeah that'd be VERY interesting Tanz.

Wonder if it's sitting in a vault somewhere.

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th February 2011 02:12 PM

And here's the fantastic opening to the movie. I wonder if those stats were correct. Scary to think they were.

I wonder who directed the film. It's been said that Rambo: First Blood, Part II and Tombstone were mostly directed by Stallone and Kurt Russell respectively, with Costmatos there as a "ghost director". I wonder if Stallone was actually behind the camera for most of Cobra as well?

Another interesting thing I just read. Cobra was loosely based on the novel Fair Game. Later filmed using that title with William Baldwin and Cindy Crawford.

I was aware of the Paula gosling novel Fair Game (which you can also get under the title "A Running Duck") but not about Stallone and Russell doing a lot of the directing, wouldn't be surprised though, especially with the Stallone films.

I'd love a blu ray of Tombstone, my second best western of the 90's.

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th February 2011 03:48 PM

Yeah it would be good to see a Russell cut of Tombstone someday, slong with this uncut version of Cobra. I also see from IMDB that there are a few scenes in the tv version not found in the released one. Nightslasher at his job cutting up fish and Cobra and Ingrid having a brief conversation with law enforcement officials in the factory after killing the Nightslasher.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 18th February 2011 05:00 PM

Yeah,that'd be cool.

Any extras on the BD Stephen?

Same as the dvds from other countries where it's uncut. Trailer, featurette and commentary with Cosmatos. Demolition Man also includes a commentary with the director and Joel Silver. We missed those in the UK with both titles being cut.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 18th February 2011 05:05 PM

Yeah,if I remember correctly,the UK disc is a piss-poor effort all round.:(

So now,I'm heading over to Amazon Francais!

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th February 2011 05:20 PM

Just remember Reaper. I don't deal with psycho's....I put 'em away! :D

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 18th February 2011 05:29 PM

'Go ahead.I don't shop here.'

Peter Neal 18th February 2011 05:42 PM

I just LOVE "Cobra"- and would be even more excited if Stallone found the time to follow up "Rocky Balboa" and "(John) Rambo" with "Marion Cobretti":woot: I wonder if that guy was still wearing those sunglasses while chewing on his toothpick :rockon:;)
As even "Commando" got its "Unrated Director's Cut" after so many years, I still haven't fully given up hope for an uncensored "Cobra" yet.:)

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 18th February 2011 06:56 PM

Here's hoping Peter!
Stallone could do it!

Just bought this version.:woot:

Stephen@Cult Labs 18th February 2011 07:05 PM

What's that? Swedish version?

Peter Neal 18th February 2011 08:06 PM

Definetely a Scandinavian version- I spot a Danish rating on the front sleeve... That's the standard look for WARNER'S DVD and Blu releases at the moment.

newgen2005 19th March 2011 09:52 PM

I imported the HK Blu-Ray and to be honest I am not at all impressed with the picture quality! I have seen a HD (720p) TV rip and it looked better than the Blu-Ray I just spend £19 on.

Here are some uncompressed screen caps I took from the disc.

i have never seen Cobra, which is why i have just ordered it on dvd for the pricey sum of 67p...

Peter Neal 20th March 2011 08:50 AM

It's most certainly more than worth any of those p!:p:rockon::cool:

I'm curious why would someone now want the VHS when the Blu-ray and DVD is out.

I also believe the VHS is cut. I used to have it but sold it to Blockbuster in 2004 when I bought the uncut DVD from America.

newgen2005 20th March 2011 03:46 PM

I don't want it to watch it, I just like collecting old VHS releases.

Just go to places where people sell their VHS's in bulk after upgrading to DVD.

So Cash Converters, blockbuster and Ebay.

I used to have it and sold it for, I believe, 50p to blockbusters in 2004.

pedromonkey 20th March 2011 09:21 PM

blockbuster doesn't by VHS anymore. pointless going there..

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 12th October 2011 06:38 PM

Anyone pick up the UK BD of this mozzarella classic?

Splatterdragon73 15th October 2011 09:07 AM

I believe the relevant British HD release boasts an audio commentary, featurette and trailer. I would also hazard a guess and think the film's complete too. The same goes for Demolition Man.:)

Yep, the UK Demolition Man BD features the uncut version (complete with Taco Bell references).
