A certain retailer...

So this is interesting. A certain retailer only wants to show the reverse side of the Arrow titles. That kinda defeats one of the major points of the range - giving people some all-new original artwork. The reverse originals are there to give people the choice plus I love the original Macabre and HBTC images but is anyone browsing seriously going to pick up Sleepless with the original poster image? It's so crap it hurts. This is where we're at - marketing people choose for you. Oh that and the price set is going to be so low there's little point making the effort spending on producing decent discs in the future.

Exactly Almar. It is optional we apparently live in a "Free Country", Full of freedom of choice & Speech. I have the shameless titles on all but 2 titles on the side as Sold not the optional back cover.I find most of the Old VHS artwork for many titles on most labels to be cheap looking. The new reprints make for a more eye catching browse. I admit if some titles had been shown on reverse side when I was in HMV/Or & Amazon/Ebay I wouldn't have bothered. A picture paints a thousand words and something that catchs the eye is a reason to pick it up and have a look. A Yellow case with lime green Or Fire engine Red Writting/Background, would for me at least interest me more than a boring old sketch drawn in 1971!!.

So you are right I personally would not be drawn to an original poster image for sleepless.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 29th May 2009 05:36 PM

Now that is bollocks (The dogs by any chance Almar?;)) Alot of time and effort went into these releases.Don't let them put you over a barrell.NOW is the time to start selling straight from the site mate.I've had that a lot in the last three years of business, people holding a gun to your head. There's always a solution to counterbalnce it mate.;)

Gold6082 29th May 2009 06:01 PM

I can only think of 1 retailer who ever stocked items, offline so it don't take robert the bruce to add this one up.

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 29th May 2009 06:05 PM

Time to hit ASDA and TESCO Almar. They DON'T care what they sell,as long as there's cash in it.Today for example,ASDA are currently selling UNDERWORLD BOX,UNDERWORLD 3,MARTYRS,and MANY,MANY other low budget horror films.

Philleh 29th May 2009 06:34 PM

I'm guessing it's the boobs that are putting them off?

Gold6082 29th May 2009 06:36 PM

Ironic, The Boobs put them off but they make Bigger tits of themselves than thoose on the cover by going for the little house on the prairie look.

Add to that fact that the title of the film is in Italian on the reverse side and one really does start to wonder about the logic behind that request.

spooks 29th May 2009 06:43 PM

tell the retailer in question that they can get their staff to turn the covers over.:D When i worked for zavvi(:ack:), i tried to see if manhattan baby would sell with its reverse side of the sleeve on display. it didn't

bdc 29th May 2009 06:56 PM

Pretty absurd...
Btw Amazon is still showing the reverse cover of Baba Yaga.
I noticed all 3 Arrow dvd's are different prices (pre-order)?
Is this normal?

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 29th May 2009 06:58 PM

Totally crazy.Okay,we all know what we need to do in these certain retail outlets.....;)

Almar@Cult Labs 29th May 2009 08:30 PM

All good feedback guys - I'm quite up for hearing they're right btw if anyone is in agreement - I just think it should have a chance to work first - or not! Anyway do keep the feedback coming - I won't be able to respond much as I'm away and only able to get on via a mobile but come Sunday I'll see what the verdict is. As for pricing I need to find out more about this.

vincenzo 29th May 2009 10:36 PM

The sight of topless nudity on Optimum's Emmanuelle sleeve didn't stop most retailers stocking it. They're just being sheer bloody-minded.

Fully agree. Definitely an option worth exploring.

vipco 29th May 2009 11:45 PM

100 % behind you on this one Almar.
I dont know how intelligent guys like you all at Shameless and Arrow can work in an industry thats seemingly made up of idiots and greedy bas****s.

The 'sell from the site ' seems a possible way forward.
Nine Below Zero sell all their merchandise from their offical site and the highstreet , and going by the forum there, selling from site is pretty popular with the members , plus it brings alot of traffic there as well.
Maybe something to think about a little more seriously perhaps.?

Good luck.

Philleh 30th May 2009 12:19 AM

I don't think I saw that Emmanuelle DVD stocking a certain store whose voice my master hears.

Saw it in Virgin though, when it was Virgin! ha.

I bought mine from the Nipper Dog Store, though the Truro branch seems to be inhibition free. :D

bedorca 30th May 2009 08:09 AM

GGGGGRRRRRRRRRRRR

Bloody PC brigade!!!! :mad::mad::mad:

Paul 30th May 2009 01:24 PM

ASDA is a good idea to sell DVD's through. Horror DVD's sell well in there. There's always plenty of Horror in the DVD charts outselling the bigger Hollywood films. (In my local ASDA at any rate:D)

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 30th May 2009 05:08 PM

Spot on mate.Although I wonder if ASDA would want even more of a cut than the woof shop.....but think of the sheer volume of numbers looking at dvds in ASDA......;)

Philleh 30th May 2009 05:40 PM

Plus think of how many ASDA stores there are around the UK! ha.

I got my Emanuelle from that certain store.

Almar its time to get selling on the site.

Philleh 31st May 2009 01:15 PM

My store clearly sucks scrotum!

Pete 31st May 2009 01:49 PM

Clearly!

I tell ya when i eventually open my business im going to display dvds with the most lurid in your face covers possible.

Yep.ASDA/WALMART are SHAMELESS when it comes to making money.;)

Almar@Cult Labs 2nd June 2009 04:20 PM

Thanks to everyone for the brilliant feedback. The results:

1. The retailer will indeed now be stocking with the new artwork
2. Now that this site is Cult Labs it gives us more freedom to look at moving into selling direct so that's going to be looked into in the coming months.
3. You're all awesome!

Thanks again everyone and proof that your feedback can work! :woot:

vincenzo 2nd June 2009 04:35 PM

Excellent news Almar.

Almar@Cult Labs 2nd June 2009 04:40 PM

Wouldn't happen without the support on here.

Wilson Bros 2nd June 2009 06:23 PM

Good stuff, Almar! :)

would selling from the site mean youd see a higher revenue from sales rather than those stocked in retailers, i.e. do retailers take a cut or something.
as you can see i have no idea how business works :D

Almar@Cult Labs 2nd June 2009 07:46 PM

Selling direct should yield more money but you just don't turn down store networks or established e-tailers down lightly and fair enough - it's their businesses and they have views on what they want to stock but increasingly one wonders where the voice of the consumer is in all of this - hence a forum like this becomes rather useful.

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 2nd June 2009 10:11 PM

Great news Almar! :woot:

Pete 3rd June 2009 09:52 AM

Great news!

If you sell direct would you do a Redemption and sell other companies product as well?

The Reaper Man@Cult Labs 3rd June 2009 05:15 PM

Glad to see common sense has prevailed.
Although selling from site is still the way to I reckon.
I wouldn't discount knocking at the doors of the conglomerate corporations either. This way the 'niche' shops doesn't get a stranglehold on the market.;)

bizarre_eye@Cult Labs 7th June 2009 10:52 AM

A little bit off topic but linked to this 'certain retailer' ... they seem to have gone a bit nuts and are selling all 3 new Arrow pre-orders for £5.99 a piece! Me, as the consumer am not complaining though! :woot:

Almar@Cult Labs 7th June 2009 05:06 PM

Well at this price I think they're unmissable releases!

Gold6082 7th June 2009 05:08 PM

Glad it all got resolved in the favour of all here. :D

Almar@Cult Labs 7th June 2009 05:11 PM

Yes it was an interesting test. I'm currently helping put together a horror range that may go into ASDA - now that's going to be another test - there's going to be a style of branding not normally seen in the UK let along a supermarket!

Paul 7th June 2009 06:00 PM

Can you give us any more info on what this range will be, Almar?

Almar@Cult Labs 7th June 2009 06:24 PM

Not as yet - it's simply not mine to reveal - but it'll be very different to Arrow and Shameless. As soon as I can say more I will - I don't want to tease but thought I'd mention it in passing as retail groups really have a lot of say over how your horror makes it to market - if at all!
