Man looking at the Blue Underground BD's of "City" and "Django" they can kiss my ass.
Seems if I do get a Blu player i'll only get new/newer films...as all I've seen on all these comparisons/reviews is the picture in a sand storm of grain on older/low budget films.

The BU "City" and "Django" on that 'land of Whimsy' site look appalling.
Would the fact that the grain would be moving really change the way such trasnsfers look??

Seems these type of movies should just get standard, top class, DVD releases imho.

As I said the 'Arrow' standard DVD of "City" blows all these BD transfers away to my novice eyes.

Older movies always have a degree of grain to them, some more than others. It's just that blu-ray has the resolution to show it more.I actually have no problem at all with film grain. It's when they start to use DNR to remove it so that it looks like a movie that was filmed in 2010,that I have a problem......I think it was Gordon Gecko who said it best....Grain,for lack of a better word,is Good. Grain works.

I can certainly understand people's reservations about Blu-ray and the issues of grain etc. But honestly, when you see them on an HD TV they look stunning, simply breathtaking. I watched Mad Max 2 on BD earlier and I can say, hands down, this is better than ANY DVD I have EVER seen of ANY film. When BD gets it right it simply blows DVD out of the water, it elaves it standing in the dust. BD gets closer to proper film resolution - why wouldn't any movie fan want that? DVD's still a good format, but there's no denying that BD is even better.

And the BD of City of the Living Dead is less grainy than my old ABUS disc. And anyway, BD handles film grain better than the DVD MPEG-2 codec, so it's no surprise Arrow's BD looks so good. DVD tends to just see grain whereas BD sees detail in the grain, something DVD isn't equipped to do.

Very happy with the COTLD DVD, the print (And audio) blew me away!
I was always 50/50 in regards to City, but now it's up there with The Beyond, ZFE & Duckling for me. Great job, you guys did Fulci & Salvati proud.

Grain is indeed good, and should be left alone. If you remove the grain (via DNR) you lose detail, and it begins to look like a mess.

I still need to get this and Day of the Dead on Blu-ray. Dawn was my very first Arrow purchase, and I wish to buy as many as their Blu-ray releases as possible!

Those of you who are curious, Caps-A-Holic's comparison shots between Arrow & BU are now posted at caps-a-holic.com. I can't post the link because I don't have enough posts yet.

Don't see a difference (the Arrow one is a teenchy bit brighter? Turn down your contrast if you want it a teenchy bit darker).

Here's the link.

I don't put a great deal of faith in screencaps on their own as they are no substitute for a moving image and, from what I saw there, there isn't a great deal of difference between the Arrow Video release and the Blue Underground one. It's a little like the difference between Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1; the difference is so tiny that you would need a bat like hearing to be held to tell the difference between them.

Vinncent - click on the picture you want to look at from the row of pictures along the top. You will then get a larger version of your selection.

Click on the part of the picture that most interests you. you will see a rectangle appear that shows the bit you picked.

Underneath will appear an enlarged version of your selection. Use mouse on/off to toggle between the two.
